Hey everyone
Im newly joined as I am a long time fan but never owned and might be buying a Beetle soon. Just wondering if you can recommend any insurance companies good for bugs.
And any that allow/or cover modifications such as larger engine, exhaust etc...
Thanks

NRMA do less than 9000kms a year and drive it once or twice a week, $140. You can put in mods and they will cover them.

NRMA classic and Vintage i mean.

All mods must be engineered and approved by the state's main roads and have the paper work to cover them, I insure all my cars with Shannons and the guy stated to me that they will insure your car and take your money with a modified vehicle but they will ask for the paperwork when you make a claim, no paper work they will void the insurance.

I'm with Shannons as well. They're very cheap and have good customer service. The only complaint I have is that when I needed to make a claim and was required to pay excess, they completely refused to send me a written bill or invoice of any kind. They would tell me over the phone that I needed to pay, but they would not put it in writing, neither post nor e-mail. I insisted that I wouldn't pay without being sent a bill, but Shannons kept repeating the fact that the policy document supposedly includes everything and hence they can't send a bill. In the end I paid electronically based purely on their reassurances over the phone and everything was fine. I was uncomfortable about it though.

Whoever said this needs to understand what "insure your car" means.
Taking your money is not the same thing.

Sounds like a deliberate misrepresentation which causes another person to suffer monetary losses. There may be a law against this kind of thing.😂

I'm sure this is covered in the policy document novel, but a statement like that is pretty disappointing nevertheless.

its perfectly legal, mate as they insure the car in a road worthy state. if modified and not engineered or approved its not road worthy. quite simple.

ive been with Shannons since 2000, never had a problem with them and always happy with their responses when ive made claims.
would happily recommend them.

I have been involved with hundreds of insurance claims, some have been on my side. I deal mostly with Shannons, NRMA, LSV, RACV Classic.

Shannons have a customer service that cannot be compared to any other. They make your side of the claim as easy as possible. They will even pay the quote to you, and you can fix the car yourself with your own parts.

This is where insurance gets tricky. It is not about whether you can afford the insurance, but whether you can afford not to have it.

I recently had a vehicle to repair that was Shannons insured. He finished it, had it engineered, had it insured, and crashed it only 6 weeks later. The assessor ticked all the quote, and the car is repaired no problem, including all modifications damaged.

That said, LSV has cheaper policies on a lot of vehicles, however I will not give as good a report on the repair side of things.

If repair prices are cut, then quality has to be less. F A C T. No BS. Less money means less quality. You cant demand perfection if the payer wont pay.

I have been with Shannons for about 12 years and made a few claims with no problems. I have a lot of mods on my car, but they are all noted on the policy although I don't have any actual engineering certificates.

About 2 months ago, I rolled my bug (after missing a roo), and the repairs are more than the insured value, so they paid me out, no problems. They said I can re-insure with them when it is repaired. They said I will need proof that the car is ok, so I may need a statement from my repairer and/or photos. I have wondered whether they may also require a blue slip.

I have to say, they have been great to deal with.

I'm with Shannons, have been for 11 yrs, never made a claim, but price is good and so is salvage rights. You can also nagotiate insurance value. Book value on an old VW isn't much.

That is dead right LOWBUG. I retained my bug no problems (salvage rights), but only had it insured for book value, when I should have had it insured for repair value. My repairer (who does a lot of classic cars - my bug is sitting next to a '56 porsche at the moment) told me to make sure I insure it for a lot more when I get it back.
I was paid out, but still have to make up the shortfall to get it repaired. It was still a huge help though.

If I ever have an accident I can only hope its a front ender, too much money invested in engine and gear box, more than the insured value of the car.

Have the Porsche and VW insured with Shannons. No one else would touch me for the Baja and all the other quotes i got for the Porsche were REDICULOUS! Shannons are the best value with salvage rights and great customer service. When you speak to someone on the phone you can tell they actually care they arent just a phone jockey. I have 2 cars both on limited driving policies with no limit on K's fully comprehensive insurance and couldnt be happier with them.

Like Jeff, I have claimed through Shannons, no engineering cert, all mods noted on the policy.

SHANNONS is the Biggest classic car insurer..

I have My beetle with NRMA classic insurance...

You get the car back if its a write off... plus the money..

You can nominate how much You want it insured for..
[within reason] $5000 - $10,000- etc..
the premiums go up with the cover naturally..

Jeff
I thought You would have Your beetle insured for $10,000
at least...

cheers

I would have Lee, but I am married. She now sees that it does indeed need to be insured for more. Better late than never I guess.

Looks like I don't get it back this weekend. Hopefully next weekend - will miss Sawtell though. :-(
