Not sure if this allowed, but I spotted an ad that SuperCheapAuto are selling Valvoline Classic 20W-50 oil for $9.99. Seems cheap to me for a reasonable stock oil.
One day only Saturday 20th August.

I'm not affiliated with supercheap in any way.

cheers Pete.

I used plenty of this oil years ago. Nothing wrong with it if used in the correct application, ie a good tight (or new)engine, and change it when necessary.
I used to run it in my HQ which had a 173 low compression engine running on LPG. I used to get 15 000 km on an oilchange no problems.
That engine now has about 600 000 km on it and is still out there haulin' ass.

some marketing person changing the packaging so they have to get rid of the old packaging that's what we have found.

So how often should the oil be changed? I'm out here on the road with 4000km up in 2 weeks and thinking of changing very soon. Droped sump, 5 litre capacity and external oil filter, motor has used about 200ml over the distance but not sure if that's burned or leaked. Changed oil and new filter just before I left home.

Recommended oil change is every 3000 miles / 5000 km or 6 months.
IIRC 500ml oil useage every 1500 km is considered normal.

Every time You take Your foot off the throttle when driving air is sucking in past the crankshaft pulley into the engine...
including dust etc...
I never drive on dirt roads...

the Mexican beetles which finished production in 2003
still had Oil Changes recommended by VW at 3000klms..
[this is from memory] but it was less than 3000miles I know...

I usually change mine when the oil gets dirty... which is sometimes at less than 1000 klms.. I have been using Castrol GTX2 which is now no longer available...
replaced with two GTX's... 15w/40 and 20w/50...
I use the latter... BUT
many oil companies are now lowering the phosphrus level in oils so they don't affect the catalytic converters..
which most cars now have...

so, I'm on the lookout for some good low cost oil...
BIG W is the cheapest for Castrol and Valvoline oils they also sell SHELL and others...
I did notice a classic car oil somewhere a few days ago...
but cannot remember the brand...

I did see some inexpensive caliber branded oil... or similar name...

NULON is a good Australian oil...

prices for 5 litres of Oil is scarey at all Auto Shops...
Castrol Magnatec is $42 to $46 and $34 or cheaper at BIG W
was $26 at Big W last week..

It IS a well known fact that it doesn't pay to use synthetic oils in VW engines unless You have a sealed rear crankshaft
as it still needs to be replaced when dirty...

You can get a bit more mileage if You are using a spin on full flow oil filter system...

I would still be changing every 3000klms Maximum Don...

and My engine uses a bit of oil sometimes on trips...
but I just did about 340klms this week with no useage... lol

a tappet cover let go last week dropping about a litre on the concrete... lol

Your engine deserves the best... lol

well not the cheapest... lol

Crikey Lee, you southerners are getting ripped off, magnatec in our store (QLD) is $36 a bottle.
Your full GTX range is still available.

Red GTX3 = Now GTX 15w40 (silver/grey bottle)
Black bottle GTX2 = Now GTX 20w50 (very pale grey bottle)
White bottle GTX = Now GTX 20w50 (white bottle)

We beleive it was done to cut down on the cost of bottle production (Ie less colour more $$ saved)

That calibre stuff you saw, is just Caltex's own brand of oil, renamed.
