i had one this morning at 6am when i was at the paper shop the bus driver comes over and says
"" Those things still going the engines were really relaible "
I responded yeah just rebuilt the reliable engine
I really ARK up when i get the "Got a Porsche engine in it " I respond why would i want to go slower
This is more naieve than dumb
I make it a thing to give my friends kids toy VWs - to get them to the air cooled side early - and I gave some beetle models to my mate's boys at christmas.
His 4 year old opened up a white beetle and I said "Look - it's just like mine" and I showed him photos of my bug on my phone.
He looked at them and then asked - "Did your one come in a packet like this one?"
Kids - they are like really drunk adults at times.
I'm sure everyone has gotten the "You know that Hitler designed your car" more than once.
I've also been told that Hitler actually built my car. Which is a nice personal touch, I didn't know he was at the Australian factory in the 1960s.
In the baja I constantly get "Is that thing 4WD" etc etc.
And I also get the "You should put a Porsche engine in it" or "I used to have one of these with a Porsche engine in it, It'd do 100mph in third gear blah bla blah"
Smiley 🙂
If you said I was a Volkswagen man, you'd be right.
I have been asked twice if my silver Karmann Ghia is a James Bond car

When pulled up with the safari windows open.
I asked bow many birds had hit their windscreen in the past and they blankly looked at me for a bit.
Ummmm, not a dumb question, it's happened before!

LOL Pete
I was there with you when the announcer called it a pretty little beetle ... (you said something along the lines of, "I'll give you &^%$# pretty!)
Totally the opposite. My son, named Dubba, age nearly 3 has grown up thinking most cars have the engine in the back like his Dads beetle. When he comes across an older aged gentleman with a Holden HD ute. My son says to me, hey Dad..... Look.... an old car. I ask my some where's the engine? He looks under rear side of the ute. He asks the owner and says Where's the engine?

I had the same logic when I was a kid. But I grew up with not one car rear engined but i couldn't understand why they would have it in the front when the rear wheels drove?
It all made sense latter though. Both front and rear are good as long as its rwd.
fwd is the ones that dont make any sense at all.

I'm a girl who drives a restored LHD squareback, some of the common ones are:
"Does your boyfriend/ dad know you took their car?"
"I think you lost your steering wheel love!"
"(Looking at the steering wheel) I think your car's broken sweetheart hahaha!"
(Filling up @ the servo) "WAIT! You're putting petrol in the oil reservoir!!!"
I also get funny looks when I say "no thanks, i know what im doing" to a guy offering "I'll sort it out for you dear" as I pop the engine lid, have my head and hands in the engine bay, covered in grease & wearing a flowery dress.
My favourite is when people look at my opening the front up (filled with pillows/ camping crap) and say "where's the engine???". Without fail, everytime I respond straightfaced with "oh... There's no engine...." And simply smile and wait for the look of bewilderment. Never gets old!

@ kat 😂😂
i have had the whole,
"nice porsche"
"Are you James Bond?"
"I hope you have aircon in that"
"Whats a ghia? 'cos my ford is a ghia"
"you know Porsche motors fit right in"
and it has only been on the road for a little over a year
Hahaha Rick I feel you with the aircon comments! I just point at the quarters and smile 😉

If I am stopped I can't do that. I feel the heat to much. Just sit there sweating so I can't say it isn't hot. But with safaris within 30seconda I am cooled off again so it is all worth it.

Mine's more Drag Racing orientated, when the (V8) Super Street competitors eventually come over and look around and then inside the Beetle, one of the usual comments on seeing the gear lever is "s**t, it's a stick!!"

WTF? It's only 40 years old!
And the bits that aren't sh!t plastic are sh!t metal!
You try keeping one on the road!
.most of the time on my dual cab it goes like this.......nice kombi, did you cut the back off it,then I say no factory and the next question is , did it come with the timber tray? 😂

I've had that a few times; I now say "It's not a Kombi" and leave them in the bewilderness.

When I ran a stock 1600; after arriving late to daughters dance class, in the carpark another dad, who just arrived, asked if he could look at the engine (must have been following me, as I buzzed through traffic). Once open, he looks in "nice!" he says "what work have had you done to it?" - "it's stock", "oh, a stock wrx engine?" - "no VW!".
Now I have the Type4 engine I just tell everyone it's porsche powered, no one ever questions it. (sorry to all other vw owners - I empower the myth).
After living in a quiet mountain village for a year (type4 exhaust note was heard throughout the valley). One day outside the general store, one of the locals asks sarcastically while nudging his mate "how much was your exhaust system". -reply; "it came with the $8000 engine".
The guy was owned! - he was a mechanic. 🤪
Some others already mentioned:
Hitler built.
Where's your engine/someone stole your motor etc..
I used to own/had a mate/our family car.
When I'm in W'Gongs northern district I especially love; "used to ride in my mates" because it is actually the same car they rode in 20/30years ago.
I've been updated with some good stories surrounding it - When the wheel fell off and when it was rear ended and dad straightened the chassis with a crowbar.
Funny thing is I bought it in Ryde (but they bought it from Austinmer).
My all time favorite: What kind of beetle is that?
Tuned Type IV power - shaking out the rust.

Don't forget the 914.
I think the only real difference between Porsche and VW for that engine are the heads.
I'm sure my engine is putting out more power than the porsche unit.

yes of course the 914. But the 912E is more recognizable as a Porsche.
Most wouldn't know a 914 if it hit them in the face.

An old lady came up to me in a carpark after I got out of my beetle and proceeded to tell me that she used to have "one of these (pointing to my beetle) 'shaggin wagons' as we used to call them when we were kids".
Too much information.
When we were kids a "Shaggin Wagon" was a Holden Sandman , or similar, panel van. Actually the noisiest, rockin-est ones I saw were smaller Gemini-type wagons parked near the beach, with Suzi Q at full blast... wonder what they were doing in there?

😂🙅
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!
Or my mate's VR sedan.
Its not even a wagon lol, but sure had the shaggin part though. 😂😂
