i think 68 was the first year for the balljoint bug
Dave Becker wrote:One question though... why would you extend the shock towers on a BJ front end ?
So standard length shocks don't bottom out all the time,
I usually raise the towers by only 30-40mm so with stock length shocks the ball joints don't bottom out, then things start getting nasty.

Any pics Dave? I would love to see how you do it!

pyr0 wrote:hey slightly off topic but what year modle did the beam change from balljoint to the other one ?
changed from K+L to BJ in 67 on aussie built bugs, if thats what you were asking.
.

I would not pay $10 for that beam, sorry to the person selling it but there is not an engineer around that would pass that in a road registed car for us in NSW. You can not cut the beam through like that and the welds look like that of less than a first year metal working apprentice on his first day, if that is the quality that a VW shop was offering for $480.00 then yes I would say you were definately been RIPPED off, before you all get up set I know that this is a private sale beam not from a VW shop.
They are the tiwanese adjusters not the good ones I brought for my beam. Again I am sorry for attacking the beam I see in the piture but man, the guy selling it you should take a good long look at it as it is NOT SAFE, the top beam has been welded twice, that has got to say something.
I know that there are a lot of other forum people out there thinking the same thing.
This is a pick of the raised shock towers on a ball joint beam. This dosen't need to be done to a king and link beam.

This is a pic of the beam showing the Berg style Avis adjusters, the only adjuster to use as the beam doesn't have to be cut.
These are around $130.00 ea.
This beam will be for sale at the shootout on Sunday if anyone is looking for one.

As to the legalities of cutting a beam and weldingit I am not sure but I can Guarentee you if I was to weld a beam in the centre for the adjusters it would not break on the welds. But I guess that is the benifit of being a boilermaker for 20 years. the welds on the beam of wacked 1 are a bit average.
.
dont kid yourself about buying cheap adjsuters. i had a beam done by a shonky bastard known as ray on the central coast. he used the cheap ones, i didnt know this. the beam pretty much tore in half with in 2mnths. the bottom beam was comnpletely seperated and the top was together barely a few centermeters at the top. damn lucky i was jsut having a sticky beak on day cause my wheels were rubbing te guards.
the way i gave it to the beetle up and down kariong hill... i reckon i was in the wall that arvo for sure.
get good ones or dont do it at all...

Simply Cruzin'...
The thing is was this the fault of the adjusters or the dodgey person who did it for you??????
.
well a full weld all the way round is not safe. it weakens the beam. and the pressures i gave it, didnt add to it. and yeah the guy was jsut a dick. so putit all together and you had dissaster just around the next bend.
i ended up taking it to VVDS, who couldnt believe the state it was in and that i had been drving it, and they replaced it all down there. never had a problem after that. and i was known for lifting inside rear wheels down kariong. so they guys there did it good. but looking back, i think i paid too much there also. :duh but suppose you pay for waht you get.

well if wacked's beam was maybe just grinded up a lil bit i reckon it'd come up ok 🙂
how much is the beam pictured for sale 4 dave ?
Founding member of the C'town Rat-Pack
Grinding a weld will not help if it is not a good quality weld. And they are not.
.
Not just the quality - isn't cutting the entire beam ILLEGAL?
Not to mention unsafe...
how do they narrow beams ? i always thought that was dont by cutting them in the center......i do know that it would deffinatly have to be engineer checked but

So is it illegal to weld in adjusters?? If they were done by a tradesman would they pass??
.
no i think that comment was aimed at the welding done in the pick by wacked 🙁 (i hate it when things go like this)
well thats how i saw it.....:vader

guys don't worry i didn't weld and let me assure you if i welded it would look a lot worse than that . doesn’t bother me in the slightest, i had my other beam done at CBB good work but you also pay for what you get.
Cheers
YOU HAVE JUST BEEN DAKED
don't worry it's a VW thing
and if this is illegal and unsafe i can't go on with the sale wouldn't want anything to happen to a fellow veedubber.
cheers
