Well, Ive just been for a drive in the bus and got 80km in third and it was very comfortable, loads left.
so will easy do 120km, thats fast enough for me in a 50 year old commercial vehicle with unassisted drum brakes.
By the way,
Its not how fast you get there, but how cool you look !!!!
Cheers
Dave

not you dave.... ive had my splitty up to 150, so i believe you. i jsut found it funny reading this thread. its like your at the pub, and one bloke tells a story which then prompts the next and so on. yet each story invariably ends up greater than the one before...
hahahahaha!
Simply Cruzin'...
Right, I get it.
By the way, i forgot to tell you , I had the hand brake on at the time!!!!
Cheers

now ya talking... and remember it was full with seven mates all half tanked, as they were all sipping on the wine taken from one of the 15 cases you were also carrying back, after your day trip to the winery... :duh
Simply Cruzin'...
And I bet you forgot to tell them about the car trailer on the back with another Kombi on it, loaded up with spare motors and transmissions
i once broke the speed of light in my kombi - but that was back in the sixties... i think..
I've had both of my 1600 Beetles of the Clock I think that's 90 miles from memory (about 145 Ks)
I've had my wifes Golf at 210 Ks I was going for 220 Ks but ran out of road.
And I've had my XR8 up to 230 Ks.
But do you what I like the most ?
I knew a Bloke once who would tell me he did something like 245 Ks in his Old VC Commodoore, but his speedo only went to 200 Ks.
:duh So how did he know that.
Geeee I laughed at him.
BAJA NOW FITTED WITH A FULL FLYING REBUILD
try this then....
me and the lady in audi A3 on the autobarn in germany a few years back... bit dissappointed as i expected a bit more, and having done 270 on a bike, it didnt seem as exhilirating as i thought.
Simply Cruzin'...
although having one hand ont he wheel the other on the camera, while driving at a hugh speed on what feels likethe wrong side of the road, and trying to focus some attention to the display on the camera...... made it a bit more fun.

Speaking of VC commies, I once did Appin to Wollongong (about 40km of twisty bits) in 20 minutes in a 5 litre VC.

I had my kombi wound out to 155kph on the way back from valla last year right beside my mate in his splity really scary but fun and i had the baja out to 85 mph on my spedo which is way out due to 215/75s on the front and that was the only time i really was shiting myself, that speed is not good with over a foot of ground clearance and mud terrains
You only need two tools
Wd40 if it don't move and it should
Duct tape if it move's and it shouldn't
Our old kombi with standard 1800 but in v.good condition used to sit happily on 130kph until my wife discovered that it had retread tyres at the back. Tread comes off grabs mudflap rips upwards tearing the back upwards and throwing the battery all over the engine! Used to have a standard 1300 beetle (at the time only a couple of years old) but sat on 80mph on the motorway, and that was as standard so nobody had been pulling things apart or altering anything.......I did all that later:duh

have had my 76 v6 kombi to approx 180kph ( needle stopped on the wrong side of the zero marker . didn't handle too well at that speed .
had my 69 IRS rotary beetle to 195kph @ 9500rpm in 3rd gear then shifted to 4th and backed off at 220kph . handled worse than the kombi .
had the 62 hillclimb beetle to 165kph @ 7600rpm in 4th gear uphill on a narrow winding track with a 2.9 injected type-4 engine . heaps of fun and handled great!!
took the dual-cab for a squirt last week and got to 160kph with a 2.5 type-4 big valve weber engine . p*ssed off the japcrap I destroyed .

Hey,
My beetle is a stockie 1300 bored to 1600, running a standard carby and nothing special. I had it to just over 85mph and had a little left. Was in hot pursuit by a new yellow beetle and i cant help but get the funny feeling the new beetle was in 5th and cruisin. :duh
But yeah. We'll say it maxes @ 90mph so that 145km/h.
Not bad for a stocker i thought. Dunno what revs. No tacho. Enough to make u hear the motor over wind and road noise thou. 😎
my 1600 has been driven at 140km/h. im sure it could have gone faster but i didnt want to try.
in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.
i think i only need a 2.1L t4

once and once only on a windless day i took my baja to 90 mile/hr thats max on the speedo however ive got smaller profile front wheels and tires on atm so it was prolly about 130kms/hour still not too bad. i found it was fine while i was accellerating but had to back off really slowly or it wanted to jump around. never will do it again and i hate to think of what would have happend had a bullet of wind hit the car.
i generally cruise at 70-75 m/ph which is a little slower than standard highway traffic but i dont mind.
cant wait to get the 2 litre into i though.....gonna have to get a ball joint front end though i think.

My stock '63 with a 1600 SP has been up to about 120km/h and it had a fair bit more in it. It just felt pretty scary at that speed, swing axle on the rear, K&L on the front, all with little to no alignment! bit hairy. specially when it rains

O.K. then,
I dont normally post pics of my bus!!!
But I will this time,
Speedo says 140 so it must do that.
Cheers
Dave
Any verifying speedo shots must be accompanied by a stat dec stating the photo was not taken with the car parked in the garage!
No tacho equals extra verification.

Tried mine out earlier tonight again too see if i could improve on an earlier attempt. The speedo was wavering past the 90mph almost on the ignition light so that would be pretty close to 100mph i would guess. I had my camera with me but there was no way i was takin hands off the wheel. It needs an alignment pretty bad and its running re-treads at the minute while my new tyres are coming and rims are getting powdercoated 😎
When its all back together i'll have another crack and see if i can get a snap shot. :thumb
