hey TOFU, the max is a cool bike. I ride with a guy who has the Gravity.
with the upgrades you wanna do th yours, maybe you should look at that?
another guy I ride with has Fox F80rt forks with like a SPV valve in them.
He reckons their great, but take a bit of getting used to.
Check out this months AMB for the feature on Cudlee Creek (Fox Creek).
that's prob. my fave. riding spot.
BENNETS or Kangarilla Forest!!!! I am running a bitzer. Craftworks Slalom frame, Alex Rims, old thrashed XT components, a chain that has been hammered together by rocks at the top of Sleeping Bag about 3 times, my GT flat pedals off BMX. It's a real hacker but great fun. Snapped a Giant clean in two about a year ago and just got the frame and put all my stuff on it. Dan when do you want to go out? Sunday Afternoon maybe??? Around 3:30. Let me know whens good for you.

Also have a SE Assasin and a old Aluminium SLA race bike (1983) from my kiddy BMX days. Very 80's. Black frame with all gold brakes, rims, handlebars etc.
C'mon kids gather round,
there's a new sensation hitting town,
It's moving straight, low to the ground,
it'll pick you up when your feeling down.
I ride DH MTB, I ride it hard, but I'm one of those who doesn't enjoy the hype and pretenders that go along with it.
Me fail English? That's unpossible!

Great stuff!
hahaha!:vader
vwtyp2 - I was considering the Gravity, sounds good with the Easton riser bar and stem Hayes 9's brakes and XT gear etc, but I dont think I
really need most of it. I think I'd want a lockout on the forks rather than an extra 30mm of travel.. also.. i just plain dont have to moolah! (even though I can get it for $250 cheaper than retail!):repuke Whats there to get used to with your mate's Fox forks?
Wouldn't mind heading to Mt Buffalo before the snow season starts. I heard thats a nice playground out there

there's no compression over small bumps, only the big stuff.
so you can get out of the saddle and over the bars on climbs and there's no bounce. But when they take a hit, they behave like normal.
(even though I can get it for $250 cheaper than retail!)
He He, I work in a bike shop, so I get my stuff for wholesale.
and in most cases, less staff discount too. So most gear is wholesale - 10 to 15%.
If you need stuff, let me know, I may be able to look after you on price for some things.
ah yeh, I've read up on forks with the threshold lockout - nice thing to have i'd reckon.

My son races BMX i used to be pro elite but cant be phucked these dayz...
Just got my new Raceline the other day! I've upgraded the brakes to Hayes Nine's (from Soles single pots) and the forks to Splice's (w/ lockout). Bit heavier than the XC I was used to before, but much smaller frame and fun to boot! Can't wait to go urban bashing around the city!

Sweet get some pics Tofu!
Making a few changes to my bike at the moment, building a custom fork using 1997 marzocchi uppers/internals and 2001 Z.5 20mm axle lowers. just need to make a couple of internal bits so they are compatible.
also selling the XT 4-pots, puttin the hayes cable on the front and XT V-Brakes on the rear .
Sold my DJ3s the other day for $300 too.
oh and Im going back to 26" wheels.
.
I'll get some pics soon! Why the combination of the uppers and lowers? Sounds like you'll hava a bit of moding to do? And why the revert to cable brakes? I thought you'd at least want a top front brake and mayeb cable disc or V on the rear...
...and Robert's ya father's brother...
hey Chewy, what do you want for the XT's?
Tofu, a lot of DJ's run cable brakes cos they're cheaper to repair, and you can run them though a gyro.
I forgot about that fork price for you, but I'll get on it now I'm back from holidays.
Why the forks? because old marzocchis are quality shit, everything bolts together (instead of being cyrofit and one peice lowers) and they are cheap.
With a 20mm axle and 100mm travel these forks will be as good as anything I will ever need.
Changing the brakes cause I need money, and the forks Z.5 lowers have Post mounts not IS mounts. And I dont need brakes this good.
VWtyp2, they are front and need new pads, just bled tho.
Was thinkin around $180
by the way, Im not a dirtjumper, theres just no trails or downhill around here!
.
I used to have a Malvern Star with 28" rims when I was a young boy, too high, nearly didn't make it to manhood with that bike 🙂
Didn't have a bike for a long time, but got me a Giant Iguana to go to work when I had no licence. Haven't ridden it for about 3 years now.
Hi Guys,
There some sweet bikes here, looks like there is a strong link between VW's and MTB's. Here is a pic of my bike and me having a bit of a huck. Just started the Sunshine Series downhill races a couple of weeks ago, I will be stoked if I get through the series with no breakages. Anyway any one up for a ride on the Goldie can contact me as I am out Mt Tamborine every weekend.

Ah, cool.. that old $ conundrum... hate that. I've been mulling around my shed looking at the VW stuff I could sell to make some more money, but I tell myself to think long-term and that it'll be easier to just have everything sitting there for me to put together instead of sourcing them again - P&C's, Genie extractors and exhaust, a split case gearbox, 36HP engine other crap....
I got such a good deal with my Hayes Nines that I couldn't pass them up! I'm one of those ppl that like to have some of those 'nice to have' upgrades. The single pots they replaced were terrible anyway - they felt worse than the generic V's on my old Giant Yukon

It'll be sweet to get a nice wooden slater roof rack and strap ya bikes to it when you have to some far out place for a bomb..

Cheers Tofu,
Making the rack mount is the easy bit, getting a rack is the hard bit, definately worthwhile though even though I can't shuttle 5 people like I can in the ute.

No worries, sorry about the colour differentiation in a couple pics..
Looks like you had a bit of an audience (look fit!) too.. You just running stock componants?
I really dig the slatter bike rack. Care to share what the front (MTB) axel retainer looks like and how it attatches to the rack? And the rear wheel/chainwheel too?

Heys guys
Fantastic thread.
I ride both Road and XC Mountain- although I've been riding mountain for a lot longer.
However I hate mud.... so winter riding is usually rocky or on the road, and the occasional forte into muddy forest tracks to remind myself why I try to avoid the thick sludgy stuff. This usually results in a bike that doesn't work properly for several months.
The Mountain stead is a stock Scott Boulder...except the front forks - which got a much needed upgrade to Rock Shox Dukes when the bottom of the range Manitous gave up. The Beetle soaks up any other money I could otherwise be frivolously spending on the bikes... oh for a Ti frame with Fox shox 🙂

......random gibberish for today.......
hey Tofu, tou can get the Delta/Aztec rack mounts from your LBS.
If they haven't got them, ask them to order them from Dirt Works.
they are QR only, but you can get 20mm to QR adaptors.
I think i've seen them in the catalogue - $89 right? Then its a matter of getting to gether the $300 for a slatter rack! (only a wooden slat rack will do on my oval!) I wonder you can hang the bike off the back of the bug on one of those rear mounted luggage carries - bumpy VW ride may not do it any favours during transit though (if it's not mounted by the forks)
