I've been onto my Mum's case about computerised modern cars, being so temperamental expensive to repair etc.
Having now lived with a reliable Kombi in the house, AND after experiencing electronic hiccups, AND being quoted $800 for repairs on HER 4 year old Barina (on parts that shouldn't need repairing so soon 52000k's), she's starting to think outside of the box.
So, she doesn't want classic though! DOH!!! She wants power steering and aircon and the whole lot. I've been looking at early 90's Golfs, Jetta's etc. I had a '99 Golf in Germany, and it was a beaut. They have stayed pretty rock solid throughout their production history haven't they? (i.e. no stupid engineering mutations on particular year models?).
I'd like to stay under 8K on a new car (after she has discarded the Barina).
Is anybody using something similar as a daily driver? Just after some stories about reliability, parts and repair costs.
And are most of the classic repairers also interested in working on water cooled dubs? I've met one who won't touch 'em that's all!
Any help would be most appreciated as always!
