Hey all..

Car is nearly complete. Windows will be tinted on the Tuesday and I'll post some pics. 😉

One last problem... the damn heater! I can't stop the heat from pouring out of the vents, heating up my feet, when it is already 30 degrees or so outside! lol... how can i stop this? I can close the vents, it stops half the heat but some still poors out.

i know the levers beside the hand brake control the heater... they did when I first got the car (i think), but they have stopped and the heat just keeps coming out. when both levers are down the heat comes out, and one of the levers doesn't lift right up. so i think maybe they are disconnected??
how do i check this? where do i look? i really don't know enough , so if you could please give me detailed instructions on this???
oh and by the way this is on a '73 superbug.
THANKYOU!! 😀

I think there are two main channels that come from the engine and are under the back seat and go into the sills or tunnels on the floorpan. You could always take them out and close them up? That's what I am doing with mine, but it is a lot easier because it has been stripped down to a bare shell!

[h] Heater Cable may be bent or disconnected....

The easiest way to disconnect them, is to take off the silver or black fresh air hoses on the engine....
They are the silver hoses on My engine... take them off at the top.....

Cover over the holes coming out of the fan shroud with tape of some kind... the air coming out of the fan shroud isn't hot so masking tape works well too....

then just stick the hose over the top of the tape and hose clamp it again...
this will fix the problem until You find out what is causing the problem....

Here is a pic of My engine with the silver fresh air tubes taken off and the fan shroud holes covered over with masking tape...

If you take off the fresh air tubes Lee the heat excangers will over heat as no air will go through them. It would be best to check the cables that come out of the forks that hold up the engine under the bug. They should connect up to the leavers on the end the heat exchangers. The leaver closest to the drivers seat opperates this cable. The cable splits into two seperate cables and moves both heat exhanger leavers together. The cables rust off and are cheep to replace and easy to fit.
Gary.

With the heaters turned off, no air goes into the heat exchangers....
they are blocked off at the other end.....

so there is no way they can get any air....

so just block off the fresh air hoses as shown and You won;t have hot feet....

Heaters only have air going thru them when they are turned on....

cheers

Heaters are very simple to fix on a bug - but for some reason most people just disconnect them...if you are like me (I feel the cold) you won't want to disconnect them.

As mentioned by Gary, the cables have probably just seized up from lack of use.

The heater control cables run from the lever beside the handbrake, through the centre 'hump' of the floorpan to the heaterboxes. The leaver in the down position is the 'heater off' position.

Perhaps you could try this: Find a friendly assistant to operate the leaver inside the car whilst you look at the shutter assembly on the end of the heater box (under the car), you should be able to see the cable moving a lever on the heaterbox - this lever operates a ...er...shutter (I s'pose thats the best way to describe it) inside the end of the heaterbox which controls the amount of air hot that travels into the car. If the cables are not moving then try spraying some WD40/Inox/lubricant down the tube in the floor. You may have to do this a couple of times and let it soak in before things start to move again.

There are a few other things that are worth looking at: does the lever on the heater box move (assuming that the cables are free)? Is the heater cable adjusted correctly (not too tight - which would hold the 'shutter' in the open position)?.....

Check the cables move OK first and let us know how you go. The VW heaters work very well if they are set up correctly (as you probably know by now! 😀)

Oh yeah, if you choose to disconnect the heaters to stop them 🙁 do it by removing the hoses that run from your fan housing, through the tinware, into the exhaust - then, and most importantly, block the holes in the fan housing...I will say it again - block the holes in the fan housing! Failure to do this will result in a large volume of engine cooling air being pumped out through these holes rather than over the engine - potentially causing your engine to overheat.

Let us know what you find (if you need some pics I can help too! 🙂 )

Not true Lee, the hot air still passes through the heat exchanges on or off. When off it exist through the cap at the top of the flapper box. Their all the same type 1,2,3.

Like Andy said air still passes through the heat exhangers when the heaters are off. When you ckose the leaver it shuts off the flow to the cabbin and bypasses the hot air to the outside. If you run with out the air hoses from the fan the exhangers over heat and smells like you have cooked your engine. If they have some oil or rubbish on them it will smell worse. The only time I would run without the air pipes is when I had open J pipes. Gary

Well, I haven't got around to checking out the heaters just yet. I am still a bit unsure to be honest. So I have to look underneath the car for the heater 'flaps'? Sorry if I am a bit thick, lol!

Also, another problem. Oil leakage! My bug has been leaving black marks along the drive away... I don't know how to fix this, but I really want it fixed. In the meantime I can't park her in the garage, coz I don't want her dripping on the driveway or garage floor. And she is cold outside!!

Thanks ... 🙂

I'll take a couple of pics for you and post them up here - my car is a '63 model but the design is basically the same....

Hmmm, an oil dripper hey? Well, join the club - most air cooled VW's drip oil - its the way they are designed (and, no, I'm not being nasty). Most air cooled VW engines have a pipe that runs from the oil filler neck, out thorugh the tinware behind the pully, into the air - this pipe is part of the crankcase ventilation system (this was all designed and built before the rule makers decided that the crankcase ventilation system had to be fully enclosed). As the oil in the engine becomes hot, it will create a vapour in the crankcase with will rise up the filler next. As the vapour cools and condenses, it will gather on and around the opening to the vent pipe - eventually running down the pipe and onto the ground.

Of course this is not necessarily where the oil is coming from, there are plenty of seals and gaskets which can also leak oil. Can you pinpoint where most of the oil is coming from? You may need to degreses the engine, then start it and watch for leaks to be able to tell (particularly if the underneath of the engine is coated in oil).

The main areas that usually offend are the pushrod tubes (and their associated seals) and the flywheel seal....I just thought of something - are you sure that it is engine oil? The input shaft of the gearbox has a seal on it too and they can leak. The way to tell the difference is that gearbox oil has a strong smell.

Oil leaks can sometimes be difficult to track down - if you are not sure, perhaps you should talk to an experienced VW mechanic....
