me and dad just bought a 74 1800 camper its not a full camper has no fridge and cooken stuff just fold out bed and poptop.
Anyway what my question is what gear and speeds are best
like 3rd and fourth what gear going through town and what speed for the open road????
motor is in very good nick recent rebuild

1st-2nd at 20k's, 2nd-3rd at 40k's, 3rd to 4th on the open road at 50k's... 90 is a nice comfy speed.. 100is easily obtainable comfortably on a strong engine... even 110 if yer real game.

driving in town.. stay in 3rd gear... better for the valves and cylinders. 🙂

i would agree with the above speeds and if you do go 100 km you will notice the fuel gauge going down alot faster. we cruise at 90 and you really notice the difference in fuel consumption

yep, never in a hurry in a bay. i recon they seem to sit happily in top around town at 60 as long as it is all flat and fairly straight. you can stretch out to 70kph shirf into top entering a freeway etc happily.

I go to 60km/h in third in my 1800 Bay when accelerating. 60km/h in fourth is 2000RPM almost exactly on my Bus (and is 3000RPM in third at the same speed), and I feel like I'm lugging it giving it any significant throttle below 2000RPM. But for flat cruising I guess I do it too, a bit. Much quieter! Also this depends on your wheels: perhaps Schmo's got smaller ones than I do...

You know the VW catalogue specs said peak power for the 1800 was at like 4200RPM or something, which I have never done in my bus, since I feel no extra oomph whatsoever after about 3300RPM, so what's the point? 4200RPM would be like 84km/h in third (again, wheel size dependant)!

My motor's pretty old and tired, and I almost never rev it above about 3200RPM (she sounds bad!). I don't feel the need to, it's more comfortable not to. In the Splitta on the other hand, hehehe!

I wouldn't worry too much dude, you'll soon get a feel for it. Don't lug it. And 90k's is a good speed hey? At 115km/h she felt pretty floaty...

i used to "cruise" on the wrong side of 0 that is round the clock once n stuck on the 0 needle with an 13b rotor but she gets pretty light on the wheel😂
