With regards to the type IV conversion - yes it is worthwhile in my opinion, but depends on what you are trying to achieve and how much money you want to spend. If you have a nice solid reliable 2L that you don't have to do anything to apart from convert it to upright cooling, then it is not that expensive (or difficult).
Once you start modifying the type IV block/crank/pistons/cylinders etc - then the cost can skyrocket.
You have a few options again for the upright conversion - originally I used the kit from:
www.sharpbuilt.com.au
I have now converted to the DTM shroud from:
www.type4store.com
Out of the two the DTM has undergone much more research and was much easier to fit (a lot less fiddling/grinding/modifying what is supposed to be a bolt in kit). But it worked out to be about double the cost.
Basically you'll need to run a 210 or 215mm type IV flywheel and clutch assembly, but will need to have a brass bushing machined into the flywheel to mate to the type I gearbox input shaft. You then obviously need the upright cooling kit and an exhaust which will fit under the beetle rear apron. I suggest go and do some reading at:
www.shoptalkforums.com in the type4rum and aircooledtechnology forum - that will give you a heap of things to think about.
Cheers
