There doesn't seem to be many melbourne people around. I was kinda hoping for a cruise to the drive-in or something in a month or so.

There are plenty of Melbourne people here Wild1, just got to know where to look. Not so many W.A folk, but hopefully will be over that way soon enough!

At least you've got your license which means you will actually be able to truely experience what its like to own a Volkswagen, and not just talk about it!

Need any help we are more than happy to help. Schmoburger, Fekkinell and ColumBUS all have Kombi's, they will definitely help you out!

Again, welcome aboard Marty... if ya have any kombi questions, me, fish and fekkinel are quite happy to share our varying degrees of baywindow knowledge from the perspective of youngish blokes, all having got down and dirty with our Kombi's instead of of getting somebody else to 😀... the only way to learn anything and make sure the job is done right is do it yaself after all! :lol

And there are various others around teh forum who'd be cluey on many aspects of teh Kombi, namely Helbus (madawsome paint and bodywork wizard...incidently rresiding in Melbourne), Amazer (cool guy who has tolerated a very battered kombi and cant stand asshats), Kombi_Recue (guy with so many Kombi's I could cream my panties...over the kombis that is... not the guy 😀), Lobus (the God of lowered baybus...also in Melbourne), and WarrenM (Kombi collecter from the left coast with a wealth of knowledge particularly with regards to campers)... 👍

You may also want to join BWM... a club for all bay-savvy cool people... dont be a stranger! 😂 😀 teh link be in me sig if you are that way inclined. 🙂

If you plan to drive your baja like that regularly, expect to beat out your crankcase ends and throw rods within a month.... possibly crack a head or six... and if yor really unlucky, eat your semi-auto tranny. :o

Was quiet a worryful situation actually. But i have had no choice but to drive em rough. the mates one needed a clutch to be adjusted, was impossible to lift off for anyone, the only way u could was to put ur foot down hard and let go :o 🙅

Also the fable VW engine has always been known as a low revving engine (It even says so in their old advertisements).

Thanx for the confirmation, i feel confident now to push my bug when it runs 😀 I should be able to go pedal to the metal on the 1300 or 1500, the single port acts as a rev limiter anyways.

Boozer was giving his car a nice high rev in the dirt at klubfest 😀

what I meant was... assuming a stock engine... yes, Im sure it can rev out waaaay past 4000...at least to 5000....but I can not see any way that can be good for a crappy magnesium type 1 crankcase unless one has a counterbalanced crank at the very least. I wouldnt see any problem with a quick blip up to 5000 between changing up gears, but I took Chris to mean running at 5000 revs frequently and/or for a prolonged period... that could not possibly be doing the stock engine any favours.

Speaking just from my own experience driving a few *stock* VW's... they scream there asses off and can get particularly harsh not much above above 4000 revs.

The fact remains that a 1300 or 1500 VW engine were never designed to rev that high for any sustained period. :duh

So in short I dont think I made my point entirely clear in the first spate of abuse :P 😂 :beer:

The point of my argument is... even tho a *stock* VW motor is capable of revving at some pretty high speeds, it wasnt designed to take that kind of punishment as a matter of course for *sustained* periods of time... like mudbashing with the motor screaming in 2nd or 3rd gear.

Throw a couterweighted crank, aluminium crankcase, mild cam, sodium filled valves, and a bigass fan into the equation, then have the engine proffessionally balanced to top it all off, and I could see how the story could be different. 🙂

But I'm gonna stick to me guns about not abbusing a *stock* engine as a matter of course... 👍 😘 :beer: :P:beer:

us offroaders need to punish it, tis the way we need to get over obstacles 😀 We are likes beastiality to our dubs. Just wait till i show the the before and after pics of my chopping baja conversion, hehe.

People do this day in day out with no worries. IT just depends on the original quality of the engine. Alot of buggies just run stock motors. and the only way to really get any where is to give em some hard pedal.

the real things that kill it is heat and dirt. They are the dubs worst enemy more than anything, and there are easy ways to prevent those factors from becoming an issue.

schmoburger: thanks, I'll probably need a few pointers when i get the Kombi. I want to start working on it because I don't know too much about working on cars, but really want to learn. Luckily my dad used to work as a mechanic when he was in uni, so he'll be able to give me a few pointers:thumb

as for the revving, my current car's got a pretty low-revving engine and I've never taken it past 2500rpm and the only real difference i would think is that your parts would last longer.
yes, you can rev it as much as you want, as it's not too bad for the car but you might need to replace a few things a little more often (speaking from no knowledge whatsoever:P yet)

just reading this thread, just wanna make a comment on type1 motor and revs standard vw valve springs will only get u to 5500 rpm at he absolute max after that u get valve float. wen u go cw crank and high rev springs then u start seeing alot higher revs if ur motor breathes well

What the boys are getting at is 5000 revs in FIRST gear, especially in someone elses car?

I think Chris has more room to make comment when he actually gets his license and has some "onroad" experience. Respect for another persons car when given the opportunity to drive it is another thing. Anyone who doesnt have a license and doesnt really know how to drive and change gears all that well can drive "offroad" in a paddock or whatever.

Hey all,

I'm from Barossa Valley, SA for those of you who don't know. I have a '69 kombi with a 1600 SP. She's in the workshop over the weekend getting a couple CV joints replaced, a tie rod end and a ball joint replaced as well. I would put up a pic but they're all old ones!

Good luck with the search Wild1. You could always try eBay for kombis? That's where I found my baby!

Anywho, Keep fighting mate, u will get that kombi. Got great tastes. Its hard to get out of the addiction once u get hooked, i had a teacher at school that sold his kombi, 5 yrs later, he is starting to get temptations to go back in that direction.

I've had her for a year now and I'm pretty happy with the way she's been getting me around and I've fixed all the bugs in the engine, rear axle and steering etc. So now I'm gonna move onto the body.

I've actually just scored myself an apprenticeship as a panel beater, (I start monday) so hopefully I'll pick up some skills quickly and do a bit myself soon! There's a fair bit of rust in the bottom of the nose and top of the windshield area. I'll probably have to replace the battery trays in both sides and the rear corners as well. I want to return her to the original colour, Delta Green, that's the colour you can see I chipped away on the front panel under the badge. Interior is going to be a couple shades of grey vinyl like the original door cards and seats. I've got a jail bar set for the rear window on it's way in the mail.

I'm contemplating removing the pop-top and replacing the roof to make way for a nice grey headliner and large roof rack on top. What do you think?

I'm contemplating removing the pop-top and replacing the roof to make way for a nice grey headliner and large roof rack on top. What do you think?

Naaaah....I'd leave the poiptop on....have heard that it isnt such a piece of cake to replace certain poptops with metal roofs... something to do wioth warpage and such I think.

Besides... campers is the ducks nuts!... 😂... ewspecially early bay campers! 👍

not holidays yet, doing an assignment as we speak but its sssooo bloody boring they gave us an assignment to do with numbers and stuff (what?!?!?!?!?!?!?! we are visual communication students)
the suns been out during the day which is nice, but its ssooo cold at night, i think my fingers might be freezing. as for lovely people...well my friends will be back home from their unis soon enough :bounce, until then i have to hang out with my family :o

hehe, i know what you mean.. I've been studying statistical regression the last week, another day and I think I'll go insane 🤪
it's been pretty cold down here too. I got up at 7 to go uni last week and there was ice on the windscreen. That's just not supposed to happen down here :duh
and don't worry, families are always a bit fruity but they're good fun

Mildred is coming along slowly!

The fibreglasser tooks his sweet time, but at least he did a good job of it! Cant say so much about the Tow Truck Driver that picked her up from the fibreglassers for me 😬

He picked her up to bring her back to the panel shop, but of course did a half arsed job of strapping her down on the tilt tray. He had to slam on his brakes, and Mildred went smashing into the back of the cab! :cussing

He did some damage to her front end, and now im delayed once again with waiting on parts to fix her up again (which of course in a few selected words i informed him of how much he would be paying for it all).

It just gets better and better for me! They say good things come to those who wait, but this is getting rediculous!
