Have U2U'd you.

Don't want to post too much on here about suppliers who aren't sponsors.

You will find the info useful.

blk56 , the judson would be good to blow a stock 1300cc.
Best value for money at present is the Toyota blower for anything bigger or wilder.
( a fully worked 1300 would need more than a judson)

Kombi kid, in my experiances an intercooler is not necessary but it will gain more power. On my 4agze(blown corrolla motor) my intercooler made heaps of difference. Before i put extra scoops on the side the intercooler really did nothing but after the scoops it gets really cold now and i can feel the extra power

I'm in process of supercharging a 1915cc
(could be the same as 1914 or 1916 )
the best value for money would have to be the Toyota blower off the 2L 6 cylinder.
It is 43 Cu in.
You could find out the drive ratio when used on the 2 L and run it less.
Mine is a 40 Cu in (USA built Magnacharger, if you are into VW Drags you would have seen two of them on a Rail a couple of years back)
I will run 1.25 : 1 thats 25 % overdriven,
Will have to see what boost it gives.
Tried to calculate but only running it will show.
I am aiming for 7Lbs boost ( secretly hoping it will give 8Lbs) which is a good healthy street state.
Water injection really helps with the heat build up,
I'm keen to get Greedy (Kombi) going properly and see if he will do comparison test for us.
Like Steve I intend to run a sidedraught, One day I'll connect my injection to it.

Last year at Adelaide's big Bug Day Out I spoke with a guy who had a stock 1600 with the Toyota supercharger and small Toyota twin throat carby, sitting in his "Shit box" 1970 bug (a real roughy).

This thing had an airconditioning type electric clutch on the pulley so he could turn it on of off on the move - when off it freewheeled and drove like a normal 1600.

He said that he could blow the doors of the older V8 Commodores when climbing the freeway through the Adelaide hills, but he couldn't work out why he kept blowing cylinder heads.

A quick look told the story. He had half the tinware missing. No underside plenum pieces, no under-head small flat plate deflectors (he did have the under-cylinder deflectors), and no rear tinware in the engine bay, so he was mixing used cooling air with the fresh stuff.

The poor thing was being cooked every time he turned on the supercharger.

The VW heads have only enough finning to shed about 45hp heat continously, so although it CAN produce more power, it's wise to do it for shortish periods and have a VERY tight cooling system.

There is no "reserve" in the cooling system like there is with a water cooled engine - you have to get rid of the heat as it's being produced, so a doghouse shroud is the starting point, and then perhaps a set of type3 "cool tins" which cup the undersides of the cylinders for better control of the cooling air there. These also have ears which cup the exhaust valve area for improved cooling and the design also improves head cooling, since they actually REDUCE (but use better) the cylinder airflow and this increases the pressure in the plenum above, so the heads get a better airflow. Carefully removiing any casting dags which partly block the head air passages can help too.

The flaps and thermo are very important too. The thermo provides a rapid and even warmup (even in warmer climates) and the cooling flaps, when open, provide a separate air path for the head and cylinders. Without the flaps the cylinders get overcooled and the heads get undercooled.

That's just the start of it of course - external oil coolers, water injection and so on might be needed too - depending on the application.

hey
talked to mike frtom CBB and he said he wouldnt run a supercahrger at all without injection (2 grand for it) and he is using a MX5 V6 supercharger he also said u dont need to run an intercooler cause through a carb it is hard (and of cause no water injection)
what superchargers are people using u all sound like ur running watercooled engines??? i wanna do a 2L type 4 motor
oh yer he also said he wouldnt use standard cast heads he said its a MUST to use forged pistons!(how much and where do i get these from?)
cheers

Peter is your EH running a single V belt , / Does it slip.?
-
Kombi Kid, if you only intend to keep at low boost ( like 5 Lbs ), you just get extra Torque ( plus a little extra heat) thus you wouldnt need anything fancy.

I didnt Know Mike and I disagree on so many aspects of supercharging.
I'd better hurry up and finish my manifold - see if he's right.🙂
