Jeff hibbard states that a vw engine shouldn't be revved over 4000 rpm, i'm just wondering if there be any mods that u can suggest that will assist in giving the engine the capability to handle say another 1000 rpm - 1500rpm or so?
Forged cranks perhaps? what else? Anyone got any 2nd hand parts that still can be used alright for such a purpose? anyone got spares, or can suggest people who may have any? or any affordable bits from any suppliers.
cheers guys,
chris.

69' baja: kombi box, thing spindles, irs, disc front, type 3 rear drums, 2 inch lift kit, 31x10 rears. 👍
New engine in process: 94mm p&bs, 74mm C/w chomol Crank, 35.5x39 SP heads, turbo. Wierd combo, hopeful torque monsta!
counterweighted crank
VW cranks are forged. The higher an engine revs the better the rotating and reciprocating components need to be ballanced.
A stock T1 motor will drop off in HP and torque after those kinds of revs. To see gains in HP at higher revs you will need to look at more extreme cams, larger valves etc. as well as a counter ballanced crank, weight matched rods, pistons etc.
.
cheers guys.
anyone know from memory where the stock max power band is on a 1500 sp?
might start saving up parts and creating a collection for a future motor.

My opinion is to leave it stock. So much fun just dak-dakking around at low rpm. No need to scream and rev hard. Just cruise and listen to the sweet sound of the engine accompanied by the windnoise through the vent window and the roll of the tyres on the road. Almost romantic 😂
Its the easier option too Peter.... lol 😀
Was just worried. I have agreed to purchase a 009 dissy, and was reading about its performance, thinking i might need to increase my rev range to surpass the flat spot down low... but it doesn't sound like its gonna be much of a trouble (the flat spot) on a 1500 sp anyways. which is good! Which means i don't have to worry.
I should really get myself a copy of "How to Hotrod a VW engine", that will be the best bet for when i eva wanna rebuild a motor. and when i find a dry, clean place and time to do it.
Thanx for ur help guys!

hi chris if your looking for performance bits get in contact with rod penrose(rodpenroseis his user name) he has heaps of performance bits n pieces and is a reliable source of information:thumb
ps i still want that carby
its just a car for f*%k sake
cheers mate.
Great. carby still in ur name then 😀 Haha! I haven't touched it yet mate!

Thats probably the best idea IMO.
More rpm on a stocker isnt going to give you any more power it will just kill it quicker. Valves will float at higher rpm as the springs wont be able to keep them under control and as previously said the stock crank isn't counderweighted either so no good for high rpm. You won't get much more power from putting on a 009 by itself either.
I've talked to various people on this subject in the past, ie cheap performance upgrades and its a can of worms because one thing affects another. Since you are starting with a 1500sp its a bit harder again.
Best thing would be to put those pennies towards a future motor, sure its tough waiting but at least you have something to look forward to. A simple 1600dp with dual kadrons, cam like an engle 100 or the CB performance cheater cam, decent exhaust, lightened flywheel and some heads that have been touched up slightly will get you moving quicker for relatively low $. While you're at it a counterweighted crank would be a good idea as would some HD single valve springs. You'll be better off in the long run, less likely to have a piece of junk that breaks something all the time due to mismatched parts.
Check out the classifieds on
www.thesamba.com/vw theres heaps of vendors on there selling new performance bits for good prices and freight is not that bad. Of course the local guys can be a good option too.

BTW when I said this I meant I've talked to people about doing up my own motor in this way and been told not to, so I've headed down the same thought process as you Chris. I had a 1641sp that was otherwise standard and was thinking maybe better carb etc but not cracking the motor open, and was told better to leave it alone or risk messing up a running motor.
I've been trying to save and collect parts for a simple 1600dp myself for about a year now and I've still got a way to go. Its a pain but should end up with a good result.
If you're doing research on it theres a dedicated engine & performance forum on
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewforum.php?f=12 that will keep you busy for more than 5 minutes. Berg's info is brilliant as well
