Hi

I fitted a 009 that had not been used for many years, its in good condition and was bought in the late 70s so its a good German one.

I fitted a Pertronix Ignitor II along with the correct flame thrower coil and I had a slight miss at light throttle, I blamed this on the leads which I replaced and the miss gradually got worse.

Today I removed Pertronix unit and fitted the stock points and condenser, missfire is now gone.

I had to really push hard to fit magnetic collar, can these be damaged? Its not split or anything like that.

When I read the instructions it mentioned a correct air gap, the Pertonix unit I bought is the 009 specific and is non adjustable.

I also noticed that I was getting some pinking/pinging, I'm not getting any pinking/pinging with the points fitted on the same timing.

According to Pertonix II "Adjusts spark timing over the entire RPM range to compensate for the inherent electronic delay resulting in more stable timing." Maybe this caused the pinking/pinging?

Any ideas?

Did you redo the timing? You can't just swap from points to Pertronix without resetting the timing. I should know!🙁

Hi

Thanks Craig, you know what NRMA stands for? Not really my area.

Often times, IF the polarity of the sensor wires is incorrect, the timing can be in error significantly(90 degrees for MSD).

Also an intermitent interuption(partly broken wire)of the signal from the sensor,
WILL fire the ignition...no matter where the dizzy or crank position is.

In the end, your pinging is the ignition in the chamber being at the wrong time.
Whether this is from the set up,
or from a poor connection that causes random firing,
it will be very hard on the engine.
