people who "specialise" in a whole range of things
"awesome" has lost it's impact for me. I tend to think 'yeah whatever' when I hear it overused these days ... it is usually said at work as a form of positive feedback, but because it is overly used and not with the right inflection it sounds blah
I can't stand it when sporting people like cricketers, footy players and olympians are called 'heroes'. They are not heroes; they are just good at sport. Especially when they won't tour India or Pakistan because it's too dangerous, EXCEPT to make money in the IPL.
The REAL heroes are our guys and girls putting their lives on the line in the armed forces, in the Police, fire brigades and ambulance services.
Another extension on 'ITS' Jay - The Kombi had a fire in its engine bay and it's going to be mess. You do put an apostrophe in 'its' when it is short for 'it is'.
Yes, I did in the first line of that post 😉

I hate it when people use "****" cos they can't remember which swear word is appropriate for the occasion.😎

"BUGGY" "BRAD"
Click the Beetle
😂😂😂
Bug instead of beetle 👎😁
Now is that opening a can of worms?😉
Just doing a crossword...why isn't impolite, unpolite? Where does the 'im' come from? Latin I guess? If you are uncivil why can't you be unpolite 🤪
You can be unhappy, uncooperative, unlearned, unwilling etc etc, never 'imhappy' 😁
I did get the crossword done...but it does makes you wonder sometimes
The their, there and they're one frustrates me as well as the "must of / should of" mixups.
Tollway instead of freeway. A freeway is a road free of intersections. some require tolls to be paid when used.
There is no such thing as a road that is free to drive on. Car cost, fuel, rego, licence, maintenance; all of these things cost money.
So where is the "free" in all that?
The biggest on my list is "to be perfectly honest" because unless I stipulate that; I am being less than perfectly honest.
Which is not honest is it?
This is an intersting thread and hopefully we can learn a few things from it. After alll we are all participating in a written form of communication so we might as well get the grammar and spelling as good as we can eh?
must of / should of" mixups.
Should be "must have / should have"
Car costs are just that, most of those costs would still be there regardless of wheather you are driving on a public road, a private road or across an unmade surface be it privatly owned land or publicly owned land, of course rego (sorry, registration) and a licence to drive a vehicle on public land and or roads would not always be required, therefor it is a toll road if you have to pay a special toll to use that particular road, but as our taxes already go towards paying for the upkeep of all (other?)roads, does that make them all toll roads?. Cripes, you sure have to be carefull posting an opinion in this thread.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!
a few from ebay that i see alot that are really pissing me off a Volkswagon beatle or bettle that also happens to be immaculant....

I did put the must of and should of in inverted commers to show that I was quoting incorrect spelling.
If our taxes are paying for the roads then they still don't come "free" do they?

Correctamundo, as I saidyou sure have to be carefull posting an opinion in this thread.
and yeah, noticed that you were pointing out the incorrect word "of" so we agree on both points.😍

Have you noticed that we park on driveways, but drive on parkways?
English is a wonderful language. There's no egg in eggplant, no ham in hamburger and no pine, or apples, in pineapples. You sink slowly in quicksand. A boxing ring is square, but the building called Australia Square in Sydney, is round. You have one tooth and several teeth, so why don't you have one phone booth and several phone beeth? If the school teacher taught, why didn't the church preacher praught? If sunflower oil is made from sunflowers, and olive oil is made from olives, what is baby oil made from? Why do actors recite words in a play, but musicians play at a recital? People from Poland are called Poles, so why aren't people from Holland called Holes? Why are people who invest your money called brokers?
I think 'freeway' is free only in the sense that you don't pay a toll. The ones where you need an eTag (which I still haven't got) are invariably called 'Motorways'. Although I am fairly sure that the freeway from Heathcote to Mt Ousley was still called a 'freeway' when it used to have tollgates.
It shits me when my wife uses phrases like "Close/open the light". Damn feisty hot blooded Sicilian lover she is😉
Love her to bits but she does it to annoy me and it really works.🤓

The light bit must be a wog thing, my lady uses that term too though she's not realy a wog, claims to be but I know she was made in Australia from fully imported parts.

Spotted in a Sussex Inlet real estate catalog I saw a property that has a lot of good things going for it. To many too mention apparently,

In Fijian English you "on the light" or "off the light". And you definitely "arx" a question. I don't know why.

OK these ones get me
the difference between enquiry, query, inquiry? I use the words enquiry and query a lot and wonder if I have them arse about at times
Hmmm
Enquiry is if you need an answer to a question....inquiry means the same thing? Wanting information, asking a question
...is query the same , or is it more like questioning the answer or validity of information? Questioning the information?
You go up to an information desk to make an enquiry, where as you might go up to an teacher to query their marking of an assignment which you thought was unfair? 🤓😵💫
Wir sind aus Deutschland zurueckgekommen, und haben ein fernseher am Flueghafen zugegueckt.... (WHOOPS!!! SORRY!!!)
We returned to Australia from Germany (after living there for 7 years), and one of the first things I see at the airport is Richard F'ING Wilkins on television interviewing Aussie Soldiers (via Satelleite naturally - they were peacekeeping on East Timor, although perhaps that should be "piece keeping" given the machete action that followed)(poor taste - it's a gift!)
So this soldier screams to his family "I love yous", and I think - yeah - I'm home again. I just assumed that Australian education may have tackled that paltry issue of "you" being plural as well as singular by now..?
My, my, my... Maybe Kevin Rudd should've used some of that stimulus package for edjumakashun???
"Yous" is one of the greatest contributions to the English language ever made by Australians, comparable in its utility to the refrigerator (also an Australian invention). Whereas all Latin languages and many others have a clear indication of the number when directly addressing third parties, in English you can say (or even yous can say) "You are fat, dumb and ugly" and it isn't clear whether you're complimenting just one of the girls at the bar or all of them.
The Americans made a weak attempt with "You all" or "Y'all", but it pales into obliquity when compared to the robust "Yous". "Yous" also has the advantage of esy incorporation into various farming jokes ("I love yous all" as the farmer said to his flock) and a famous sponsor ("I love yous all" as Jeff Fennick said to his flock).
Thank yous for you attention.
