Here.s my problem! Disassembled my pedal cluster on my 1960 Beetle for paint.. Put everything back together and bolted everything down and now when I press the accelerator pedal the rod pushes out accelerator arm out off the tunnel plate socket and the cable gets caught on on the tube when I release the gas pedal, keeps revs up.. Can someone please explain what I've missed or could someone please post a detailed pic of their pedal cluster. Any advise would be much appreciated.. Thanks in advance!

It sounds like the accelerator pedal shaft is moving sideways as you turn it by pressing the accelerator. Did you remember the two circlips that hold the shaft in place, one on each side? One where it comes out of the tunnel on the passenger side, and the other on the drivers side just below the brake pedal?

Thanks for the reply Phil.. Both circlips are on, the small one on the passenger side for the actual accelerator rod and arm and the larger one on the drivers side for the shaft and bracket (the metal plate that holds the cluster in place and bolts to the pan).. Is this what you're meaning?

am not sure of yr skills but one bit of advice I was given was

"If it was me, i would have done, so far
- new plugs
- changed the oil and cleaned (or got a new) strainer
- done all the fuel lines (yes the whole way) [and used genuine fuel line cause it lasts longer)
- new filters (one at front and some people have one at the rear also
- checked the carby - fuel wise. you could even take it out and rebuild it if it sucks
- conneted the battery (imagine you are doing it not to take it back out.... maybe buy a new one)
- points
- valves
-make sure your belt is tightish... not toooo tight and not work or brittle... "

You may be an expert and I am giving advice u already know but found this stuff important. Thread when I was starting an engine after a long time is

did you put plenty of grease back on it??????????????
did you do the two big bolts up first, then the bolts in the floor????

Thanks, yeah applied lots of grease.. But I'll try doing the bolts on the tunnel plate first.. Hopefully it'll solve the problem..
