Gearbox. Trouble Getting Second Gear

As some of you are aware, I'm rebuilding my Formula Vee at the moment.

I wanted to ask advice on an issue the car had before I stripped it down.

I could never get second gear from first.

No trouble getting second from third.

No grinding..... just can't find the gear.

Is there a staggering of the pattern from first to second?

If so that might be the problem, as the shift linkages were a little loose.

Otherwise.... what would cause it not to be able to engauge second gear?

The base plate could have been out of alignment
If you cant get second the base needs to go to the right

OK translated to the setup I have, that should mean there is too much movement in the shift linkage, which doesnt allow an accurate movement to the second gear gate.

That would explain also why it slips into second from third but not first.

If anyone else has some suggestions..... they're welcome.
