Hi all,

My engine seems to be spitting oil out of the front pulley (well, around it). lots of oil around the pully end of the engine. No obvious leaks from generator stand, oil switch, oil pump cover etc so I can only assume its coming from the pulley.

Any ideas on what may cause this? I'm thinking perhaps there may be a blockage in the breather causing excess crankcase pressure??

All opinions gratefully accepted! ❗

Cheers, Marc.

I had the same thing once turns out my fan belt was too tight released it off and now its very rare to see oil spit out of the front pulley.

Cheers, Marc.

Hi, Degrease the engine and take for a drive so you can be sure were the leak is, super cheap degreaser in the aerosol is good for this

is it the original pulley or a sand pulley the org has a reverse thread that pulls the oil back the other has a rubber seal

Yes
the pressure cannot get out of the crankcase..
the breather must be blocked...

so, air comes out from around the oil slinger and past the pulley... taking oil with it...

this is the most common problem....

pull Your dipstick up about 20mm and see if the oil comes out there also...

it should also stop if the oil cap is off...

I had this once before, I went to a swap meet and picked up a shinny alloy pully really cheap......took it home, fitted it and holly shit the oil was every where?????? put the old one back on and cleaned it up, no oil leak. I think i did this 3 times before I worked it out. It had no slinger on it and I had no idea at the time. duh !

Thanks Lee, I'm thinking that too.

Worked on it last night and put the original pulley back in so we'll se what happens. Frosty, funny you should mention an alloy pulley, that's what I've just taken out and replaced with the original, as well as straightening a bent hose to the breather which was obviously the blockage! When I looked at the grooves on the alloy pulley, they were less than half as deep as the original, hence the move back to original.

I've also been looking on the Chirco.com website and they have a number of 'sand seal' pulleys, which, given the $ at the moment, I might order. My question to this is, can I fit a sand seal pulley without splitting the case? Does the seal just push in? Anybody know?

Anyway, back to the shed, there's a lot of exhaust and turbo plumbing to go back on before I can see if the unblocked breather and original pulley has solved the problem...!

Thanks for all your help
Marc.

Have a look at my last post on here. I've only just recently fitted a sand sealed pulley.

My pulley didn't have the spiral groove at all, just the seal.

originally,
engine case had to be machined for the so called sand seals
but I have seen them now that just push in...

inside the engine is an oil slinger which throws the oil back into the crankcase...
so, the grooves don't really need to be there apart from oily fumes or too much oil in the engine...

two oil slingers would have been better...lol

I've always thought of using a thick o ring there...

I have read that the problem is that the alloy pulley is smaller where it goes into the engine...
compared to a genuine pulley...
i don't think the grooves make much difference..
