Quarter window rivets
I need to replace the quarter window rubbers as they are rock hard and leak, it looks to me like I'll have to drill the rivets out to fit new
rubbers. Can I use stainless pop rivets or will they react badly with the chrome on the frames hinges? does anyone know what the originals are made
of?

Hi
I used stainless steel screws with allen socket heads..
I have seen the rubber cut on the outside on some cars.. so the rivet isn't replaced.. lol
You can buy new rivets but how You punch them when on the car.. ??
I don't think stainless steel rivets would affect the aluminium..
I may do the same..

the originals are steel with a hollow shaft
you can buy the original type rivets very cheap also comes with the fiber washer
don't buy the cheap Chinese rubbers

Can't you fit new rubbers without removing the rivets?.....or do the rivets need replacing?
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

no you have to remove the rivets n bracket in order to get the 1/4 window rubber into place

I used stainless steel security screws on my old bug, so people can't just undo them to get into the car.. not that its not hard with a brick
anyway...
It will all be OK in the end, if it's not OK it's not the end!

I replaced mine without drilling that rivot out.
I instead drilled out the 2 rivets that hold the swivelling hinge to the outer frame.
They can be replaced with just normal 1/8th rivets and are hidden inside the door once its all back together.

I have replaced dozens of them, and always drill the two rivets on the frame instead. As Joel says, they get replaced with two regular rivets and cant
be seen. The original factory swivel pivot rivet is retained.

Same as old Holden quarter windows rubbers. I have done hundreds of old Holdens since 1989 and back then no pivot rivets were available, and drilling
the two on the frame was the only way to go, and seeing the quality of the pivot rivets available now sometimes, and the methods to fit pivot rivets,
drilling the frame rivets is still the most trusted way to replace the two frame rivets instead. A bit of patience and time and it will all come up
good.

Thanks for all the tips, I did notice the two frame rivets and didn't think about drilling them out. Sometimes you can't see the trees for the
forest :-)

Hi vw54, Ive bought the rubbers from Mick Motors, how do I tell if they're Chinese? I haven't tried to fit yet but the detail in the molding looks
good. should I use contact to glue them in? The old ones were rock hard and crumbled when taking out so couldn't tell if they were glued or not. I
have the quarter windows completely out so I can clean up and re paint prior to fitting the new rubber.

What year bug?
the big window 68 onwards cars have a C channel they lock into so no need to glue them.
I did mine 14 years agos using WestCoastMetric rubbers and they are still like new.

Hi Joel, it's a 70, I've fitted the rubbers and all seem to fit well (no glue) so all good.

I have the correct rivet for the pivot lol, but how do you actually punch those hollow ones?
I have no choise, nos quarter windoes don't come with the other part of the hinge.
