Try another battery or re charge the one your using. Make sure you have a good earth strap from the battery to the gearbox too. Dave

I tried it by hand just now and it's easy enough until it starts to compress and then gets a bit harder, you can hear the compression end and a
little whoosh and then it becomes easier again.
My interest is really starting to wane now and I'm thinking of selling it. The engine was fun (and I'd still like to see it start) but I just can't
devote the time to working on the body.

Too much compression won't be your problem, so don't worry about that.....Just looking at your combustion chamber photo rules that out. Chambers
look standard, so they are probably around 55cc. Even if you had no deck height you wouldn't have any more that 9.3:1 comp. Realistically, you
probably have low 8:1 comp.
Check your earth and the quality of the battery like Ragged has said.

Thanks guys, it was a brand new battery but I did melt the jumper cable that I was using for an earth. I'll try again with a better earth strap.

Just because it is a new battery does not mean it is fully charged.

A worn srarter motor bush will cause the starter to drag onside and turn slowly. Change the bush whenever the engine is out.
