1600dp in 1200sp trans???? Help...
So I know this topic would have been covered a million and one times. I have done some research. As far as I can see the block itself bolts up fine.
The only issue is the flywheel. Now either grind out trans or replace??
My question is. I have a complete 1200 incl flywheel and clutch. Can I swap that into 1600dp? Hense removing and issues? Still running 6v starter on
12v system..

I presume you want to put a Twin Port 1600 in an older 1200 trans?
The 1200 engine you have will almost certainly have a 180mm clutch and flywheel on it. That isn’t big enough for a 1600, it will slip almost
immediately. You need a 200mm clutch and a flywheel to suit.
They come in 2 basic sorts :-
- There was a transitional 200mm with a 6 volt ring gear on it that could be used with a 6 volt starter. They are quite rare.
- There is a 1600 one with a 12 volt ring gear requiring a 12 volt starter. You can’t use a 6V starter on a 12V flywheel or vice versa. You have one
of those.
There’s some other issue with flywheels with or without “O” Rings but you can get past that.
Using a 12 volt flywheel will require a small amount of clearancing in the bell housing, a “12V starter to 6V gearbox” starter bush (6V outer with the
smaller 12V inside diameter), and a pressure plate with the thrust face in the center to suit the gearbox without the thrust bearing guide tube. The
one you have on the 1600 probably only has the bare fingers in the center.
So, after you get all that together, you’re on the road, same as thousands of other early beetles with later engines.
