Scarab's Notch
Well guys, after commenting on everyone else's projects etc. I thought it was about time to start a build thread for my 1967 Notchback.
This is going to be a long haul type of build for myself and my 4 sons, well, the two oldest ones anyway....ages 12 and 13.
It was purchased about a month ago from a fellow AVD member, Splitmeister, after seeing it advertised on Ebay.
So anyway....first stop on the road to getting this thing how we want it was to start stripping out the interior to see what we have to work with in
regard to floor pans etc.
What we found was not great  but it will give my sons and I an
opportunity to do a bit of welding together

Hopefully all the photos don't bore you all. I just really enjoy seeing what others are up to on their projects....hopefully you all feel the same

Well here's some more then....
Rear seat area as purchased....
Everything than can be removed, was then removed....
Then it was time to start on the dash area.
Dash as purchased....
And how it looks now....
Trying to find time to work on it is pretty hard, (I've had it a month and only removed the interior!!)...as you would all know, working full time, 4
kids, and a house to maintain....so updates will definitely be slow on this thread, but don't worry, the Notch isn't going anywhere and updates will
happen....
like the old shampoo ad "It won't happen overnight, but it will happen!"

i have found that if i do a half hour a day it soon becomes an hour etc it's the starting that i found hard not the doing

Great to see another one on the road to recovery Scarab As greedy said keep at it.
I'm 1/2 way through getting a fasty on the road again. Type 3's are great cars to work on, and even better to drive.
Love the kombi also, hope your boy's enjoy the VW's.

thanks for the encouragement Greedy! That is how I've done the work so far...gone out to do a little bit for a half an hour and it has turned out to
be longer each time......slow and steady wins the race!
thanks to Andy too for the encouragement. do you have a thread on here for your fasty?? I have really enjoyed what I have done so far....I have
found it quite relaxing. As for the boys enjoying the VW's....well, it was really their choice! My eldest wanted a beetle, but the second one
wouldn't have any part of a beetle restoration, so we compromised (from my point of view anyway)....the eldest still got a VW, and the second one got
somethng he was dead keen to do up as well.....the best of both worlds!

Hi Paul, what a great family project. I love the early type 3's so I'll definitely be following your progress. My 2 year old daughter loves my funny
little volksrod and is always around when I work on it, but she's not really much help : ) Must be good getting some father son(s) time and achieving
something at the same time.

Looks like a cool project! What are your plans for it?
Great work getting the son's involved, my old man wanted nothing to do with this dub! Last one though it was always good to spend some time with him
and work on it...
I read in your other thread that you will be registering it, in SA, its easy as piss, take in the papers, pay them, and off you go!

Well Colonel, I didn't think my kids would ever be happy with anything old to do up.....I used to be the Spare Parts Manager in a prestige vehicle
dealership and the kids were used to me bringing home flash cars, so the idea of doing up an old one took a bit of convincing but as Tim said, the father son time is pretty rewarding in itself.
Glad to hear your daughter is interested in the volksrod Tim....coz I know I definitely am I have been reading your thread with each update!!
Well Doctor....normally the rego thing would be that easy, but in this instance, I dont have any papers for it but I have the original number plates....so I believe that I will still need to go through Regency for a
chassis number check etc. I dont expect too many hassles, because everything will be like new when the time comes to do that. I intend checking into
it fairly soon though before I get too far into the build, just to be sure on the details.
Again, thanks for reading guys. I figured I would start a thread for my own benefit to keep a track of what I have done and if anyone else is
interested, then thats great too, so thanks for the encouraging words!!

I had no papers for mine when i re regoed mine, grabbed the form from the Transport SA place, put down the engine number, the rego number and the
other details that it needed including "NOT RECORDED" in the chassis number section and i was good to go... As long as the car isnt reported stolen
and has no defects on it you will have no problems, and no visits to regency required!

I can't believe how many people have commented on my Notch......everybody is so keen, hope i don't let you all down with the quality of work
I have read so many threads on here that really spur you on to better things, I am really wanting to go the extra mile on the Notch and make it really
something......time will tell i guess  Thanks for
the encouragement.
I am that excited about my Notch that I can't stop talking about it...so much so that my wife is totally sick of hearing about it!!

hey, thanks Smiley....I actually just finished reading your thread, nice work!! 
unfortunately, updates will be slow on mine (due to finances etc.) but there is heaps to do that wont require cash....just time and effort, so I will
update as often as possible hopefully.
I would prefer to work on it as often as possible, if only to keep the enthusiasm up in my boys....you know what kids are like
Hopefully get a bit more done on the weekend......hopefully!!!

Well colonel, where do I start?? At the moment,
the work is aimed at stripping as much out as possible, so I can do a body/pan split, that way I can restore the floor pan and do it properly....I'm
not a small bloke, and I think it will be easier to do the pans without a body on it
I have been influenced a lot lately by the restocal movement ( try checking out the readers rides section of http://www.restowagenuk.com/forums.html )
The plan is to have a fairly stock looking exterior, but in a fairly bright color (haven't decided on colour, but the orange as shown in my signature
is still on the table as an option).
I plan to slam it as low as legally possible (I'm too old to have hassles with the cops every time I drive it ). I am LOVING the look of BRMs at the moment....thanks Izac for putting that idea in my head (your
square is looking great)!!!! but time will tell on that one too. I
saw some full polished ones recently and LOOOOOOVE them!
As for modified/highly modified.....well I am wanting it to move along, and a modified motor is on the cards.....I have driven some very quick cars in
my working life (Ferraris / Maseratis etc.) so I dont think I could do it to myself and leave the engine stock....even though I have NO IDEA how it
goes with a stock engine coz I have never driven it....but I am not expecting a lot from a standard type 3. It will all be a learning curve for me as
this is my first VW, but I have fallen in love with this Notch!!
I want the interior to be as comfortable as possible, without being too crazily modified, just a nice cool look and nice to drive (but I guess we all
want that, don't we guys )
I do a lot of drawing for relaxation....so I am dying to do my own rendition of what I want my car to be....once that is done, I'll post it for you
to have a look at.
All suggestions for my Notch will be gratefully received, and any criticism will be carefully considered.....then I will still do it the way I want!

got out and did a bit of work on the Notch over the weekend.....spot the difference
As bought....
After an hours work on Saturday with my 13 year old son....
the brown rust looking spots near the door appears to be only surface staining, the inner guards are suprisingly rust free!! Its looking like nearly
all my rust is confined to the floor pans!! CHEERING!!

The photos don't really do it justice. While it looks pretty rusty under the rear guards, I am pretty sure it is only surface stuff, that should
clean up well. There is only one hole that I can find that is about the size of a 20c piece, and another that is about 5mm wide.....I am counting my
blessings on this. I think we have really found a good one!!
Getting there slowly but surely, but my son is LOVING it! He is continually pushing me out to the shed to work on it Very proud of his attitude.

Yeh, thanks Smiley, it is moving along.....albeit rather slowly in my opinion.
I am trying do do at least a little bit every weekend, and now that South Oz has switched to daylight saving (WOOHOO!) I hope to get out and do a bit
at night too.
I am fairly restricted for space at the moment, and am only working in a carport. It is double width and double depth, but it has a lot of stuff
crammed under it (unnecessary stuff like the wifes Pajero ). Plans
are underway to get rid of a lot of this non-VW stuff (unfortunately the Pajero will have to stay) and I am going to seal off the carport with a
couple of roller doors in the next few weeks. I am fairly hesitant to dismantle too much more on the Notch while the carport is open to the street,
but once the doors are up I will drop the engine and whip the body off the pan so we can get stuck into the rust repairs on the pan and restoration /
modification of the suspension and running gear.
It all sounds very grand, but in my head it is already done  I just need to get it done in real time!!!

I know how you feel working out of a carport. I'm allowed to use one side of a double carport, but only when mum's car isn't parked in there! So
there's been a fair bit of carrying a floorpan inside and out. Luckily it's a stripped buggy pan so it's light as hell. I don't have to worry
about stuff getting taken like you do though, cause our house is out of the way a bit more, and not visible from any roads.

Another couple of hours work today....
Front luggage bonnet removed, fuel tank removed and the full wiring loom removed (that was fun, considering the engine is still in place )
Spot the differences....as purchased on the left and as it stands on the right.....please excuse the rubbish quality of the photos
So currently I have 15 hours work invested and we have a fully stripped front end, fully stripped interior, the wiring loom removed, the rear guards
and bumper removed. all that is left now is to pull the motor, remove the engine cover and doors and I'll be ready to split the body from the pan
I REALLY have to get the roller doors up before doing any
more....but I am enjoying working on the Notch too much!!!
