Gearbox?????

Gday dubbers, can anyone tell whats involved with using a G/Box formula vee style. IE put the weight of the motor infront of the rear axle, sort of mid mounting.
Drawing up plans for a lapsprint car and a trike. want them both midmounted.

cheers

I would say switch the diff around like what craig said; there isn't a single vee out there that I know of that has it upside down...

Yeah - swap the diff around is the normal caper. Curious tho... with the beetle... what's the plan for rear suspension... multi-link of some sort ??? Don't imagine there'd be much room for torsion bars and stuff with a mid engine setup...

I know of a few open wheelers that run a beetle box mounted upside down... believe it had something to do with wanting the starter motor sitting down lower to help the CoG. Need to make sure the breather hole is well and truly sealed up if going that way I'd think !!!

The upside down thing.

The Hewland Mk8 & Mk9 were originally
VW cased gearboxes and they are up side down.

The upside down thing is you can mount the centre line of the engine lower as upside down the input shaft is below the drive shafts.

Which is pretty important for inline and V config engines.

Regards,

Ian

Formula Vee btw rules say how to mount the gearbox

Turning the box upside-down would create ground clearance problems. OK for engines without a camshaft & oil pump under the crank. Most of the upside-down boxes, incl. Hewland, run a 'conventional' engine - usually dry sumped.

You will most likely lose some straight-line traction by going mid-engine, but - depending on the suspension setup - gain heaps in the corners.

Cheers, Greg

I think just turning the G/Box around and swapping the diff over might be the go. Was going to go with a set up similar to independant rear with half chasis under the beetle to give enough clearance and keep wheels tracking straight up and down
