Vintage Speed Order
Hey guys (and girls)!
I'm about to put in an order for Vintage Speed, but just want to make sure I'm getting what I am needing.
I'm currently having some issues changing down to second, it likes to grind unless it is done very lightly. I have a feeling this is because of my
shifter plate. Now, if I was to order a Black Mamba shifter, would this resolve the issue?
I am also currently experiencing an exhaust leak (from what I can determine it is one, it's making Zelda sound like a tractor, but it might be
something else?) I am keen to grab a SuperFlow exhaust from them. Now, from my understanding, the 38mm header one is all I need for a 1600tp... Am I
correct in assuming this?
Want to submit the order in the next couple of days so I can have everything before DOVW on the 11th.
Cheers,
Seb!

where are these guys located???
sounds foreign to Me... UK??
I think 38mm sounds like the standard size exhaust/extractor pipe size..
it would be great if Your lockout plate was badly worn then another type of shifter would fix it...
But it usually is a gearbox problem... synchro rings on 2nd...
or selectors??
sounds like a tractor... usually an exhaust leak... so the extractor exhaust will fix that....
this is what I have on My beetle..
cheers

Hey Lee!
Vintage Speed are located in Taiwan. Have some of the most sought after exhaust systems one can buy and are the ones behind the Black Mamba quick
shifter.
I was worried it'd be a gearbox issue... I can live with it, just have to get to a slower speed and gently put it into second gear.
Yeah, I'm thinking the Vintage Speed exhaust system will fit my needs perfectly. Thus getting rid of the exhaust plate as I am pretty sure it is from
the makeshift block off plates I put on the pre-heater tubes on the current exhaust system. Will just purchase the exhaust for now and see what
happens with the gearbox.
Thanks Lee!

Exhaust on it's way!
Will see if I can live with the gearbox issue or if I will need to get it checked out.
Might ask around at DOVW.

Sure did.
Cheaper including postage.
Classic VeeDub are closed as well so couldn't go through them anyway.
Came to a costly $600 including postage, which is pretty damn good.
Can't wait to install it

You didn't try Boris or me....either would guarantee cheaper delivered, and yes you did order the right one, 38 should be perfect for a 1600 then
upgrade to 1915.

I didn't know you guys were selling them, I just went to their shop link.
If I had of known you were selling I would have purchased from either one of you two!
Now I'm a little sad... Wonder if I can cancel my Vintage Speed order or not...
EDIT
Going to be too much of a hassle going through PayPal to get my money back. Has happened before and don't want to go through the pain again. I guess
I should just be happy that I'm getting one...

Yeah, I've seen that they're great products and I'm not too fussed that I'm spending more than I probably should have.
It's going to be great to have Zelda with a brand new rear end very soon.
Shall be great.
Ordered a whole tinware kit as well, hoping I have everything before next Sunday installed and tuned perfectly.
Then we shall have some cool photos and what not.

It's hard to say for sure from a description over the net but you may actually find it's nothing to do with the shifter, it's the gearbox.
2nd gear syncro is the first thing to go in VW gearboxes.
If you can't get rid of grinding adjusting the stock shifter, an aftermarket one isn't going to fix anything.

Sure thing Joel!
Yeah, I can baby it into the gear and there is no grinding or anything, but it is only if I'm about to take a corner quite quickly and I know I want
to be in second gear coming out of it, then when I try and put it into second it does tend to grind a little... So it looks like no more taking
corners at 40km/h will fix the issue!

aftermarket shifter will make it feel worse as its trying to speed up the gear selection process, not slowing it down.

Fair enough Craig!
I'll see if I can figure it out. I think the throw out bearing may be broken too, got some leakage coming from the gearbox.
Will definitely be taking a look at it when I've got the car on some ramps when I'm installing the new exhaust.
Got brand new tinware coming my way too. No more heater pipes and no more pre-heaters.
Ever!

Least you get it resonably priced and good quality :P
They have taiwan and UK shops but think manufactured in Taiwan. Nice exhausts
As for the OP's gearbox issue. If new shift rod bushing, shift plate adjustment, fresh gearbox oil, bowden tube and clutch cable adjustment don't
fix it then very likely to be the synchro going on second. Thats a box rebuild mate
madness is in the eye of the beholder

Yeah, I've heard they're extremely good quality.
Hmm, I'll see what I can do in the coming week. Since I mentioned the issue on here it hasn't actually happened...
Must be just a sometimes thing. Very weird indeed.

Re the gearbox problem.
Sounds like the synchro on 2nd is dying. Here's how to get by until the rebuild:
You need to double de-clutch (double-shuffle) from 3 to 2. Here's how:
In 3rd, slowing down for the corner or whatever, de-clutch, shift back from 3rd to neutral, let the clutch up, blip the throttle. (The 'blip' will
depend on road speed and how bad your 'box is. The faster your road speed, the bigger the blip needed.)
Then de-clutch again, select 2nd, clutch up, accelerate.
It sounds complicated, but it soon becomes second nature. You'll find you will be timing the severity of the blip to cover all needs. You can do the
same from 4th to 3rd, or even 2nd to 1st although you would seldom want to do that.
If you need to brake at the same time, you 'blip' the throttle with your heel whilst braking. Hence the phrase "heel-and-toeing"
