Is it just me or are others gettign the shits with these "Kids" (and i use the term as a collective and in no means putting you down) joining, asking a fuckload of irritating questions that have been answered before, and then getting all uptight and trying to throw thier weight around when someone tries to help them by telling them so SEARCH and READ..... Fuck me!

Mate, For a yr 12 kid who has just joined the site you got a lot of fucking attitude.

You have been on this site, for less than a month, now dont get me wrong, its good you are keen on vw's but christ!! all i can say is have some respect! not only for your elders but for those who are trying to help you out and

If you look we have forums such as ENGINE CONVERSIONS ("im just using caps cos it gets more attention"), we have an OFFROAD VW's forum, if you had of searched instead of posting a random question like "where do i put the radiator" im sure if you looked hard enough you would find so many suggestions that you would shit yourself,

so i say settle the fuck down, tak on the advice of those who have been here much longer than you, show some respect.

i agree with boozer. get a baja:vader.

chris, seriously everyone is on this forum because its a great way to collect information and swap ideas with people as well as catching up socially with other enthusiusts around australia and even the world. 99.99% of these people will willingly help you with problems u have and questions u would like to ask.

one thing that has kinda bugged me about your posts (and i in no way judge or label you because i dont know you) is that you has asked questions like: i want to have big hella spot lights but where to fit them? blah blah blah or where to fit a radiator?

i think that at 15 or 16 or however old you are. though it is nice to dream maybe you should save your bikkies and buy a buggy or parts to build one and ask questions like that one when u are in a position to use the help if u catch my drift. i know at 15 i didnt have the money to be building a beach buggy.

dont be discouraged from this forum. i in no way consider myself to be as knowledgable as half the people on this forum. im only 18 myself and am the proud owner of 2 baja bugs and a superbug and a baja bug project. but pretty much everything i know and has become simple knowledge to me about VW's has been from this forum and the helpful people on it.

just try not to offend people. theres no point burning bridges. guys like mikem are the guys who can help u with your buggy when u are making a decision about suspension. or which tyres to run. if i was you when mikem replied to your post i would have apologiesd and explained that it could be worded differently and you meant no offense. instead u went into attack mode.

chillax man.

Peace out

Nick

chris one thing you have to think about is buggy,s are a lot of fun
BUT
you cant lock them up and certain fuckwits like to use them as rubbish bins
cause there open
and feel that whats inside is free to take

you get sun burnt
wind blown
sand in everywhere when on the beach
wet when in the rain
dirty when playing in the bush
muddy when its wet in the bush
waived at by everybody and there dogs

thats why i opted to build a baja
my 2 girls hate the above so i built a baja
and i used to be a roofer so i worked in the sun so i didnt want to play in the elements too

now with all of your quesions
motor
i had a 2lt type 4 in my baja and after spending 15000 + building the car
i was bitterly disapointed in the type 4,s performance
i could keep it cold
i couldnt keep it from leeking oil
so out that went and soon there will be an ej22 sitting in its place
cause in my opinion the benifits of the subaru 2.2lt GREATLY exeed that of the type 4

if you where not going to use a subaru i would use a purpose built type 1

which ever way you go you will have to spend lots of money
cause to be different you are talking custom and custom =money

i have a buggy that sounds like it will fit your bill you can buy it for around the 35 k mark
or my baja for around for around 22k mark

hope this has helped your cause
or maybe just a load of ramblings

but at custom off road we specialize in what you are looking for
so you should come down for a look and chat

Thanks Terry, that really helps. Yeah, i can see who buggies can be crap. Baja's do sound good. I was planning on getting a cheap one of those to use while im in uni, and as i drive in that, i will save up in watteva project i will commence next.

Oh, and to reply to the other guy. Yes, i know im 16, but i plan to earn a living when i graduate by next year, so therefore i will be able to afford such veedubs. By all means, its not as much as a full time employer in a profession will get, but its enough because i ain't got to pay for (kids, shopping, bills such as water electricity and phone, school fees, rent etc. etc), leaving me plenty enough to save up. I have already done the figures, and it looks good.

Oh, i have learnt my lesson about being a lil' shit. I would like to publicly say, "I am sorry". Actually, this whole crisis between me and Mike started in another post where he misunderstood my use of the work "Chump". And it sorta drifted onto here. Hence why i was a bit stuck up.

Gees terry your starting to sound like brad it would have stayed cool if you guys didn't put the the smallest 1600 cooler you could find on it lessen one don't down size coolers it don't work as you know as for oil leals i hear seal kits are going cheap these days and if that poor old motor wasn't rooted it would have gone alot better and having 3 different sizes of plugs in it i thing it was doomed from the start cause somone wanted to get a subie motor in your car mine was almost stock just with 1800 heads and a cam that i dont know the specs may have been stock and if it had type4 carbs on it that would have made it go also the 2 biggest no no's down sizing coolers and carbs, out way the benifits of a type 4 hay well we will see if it go's that is :P

Thanks for the info Terry. I appreciate ur honesty.

What im concerned about, is if i get a buggy, by spending all the money on it, i would probably be too afraid to take it for an offroad beating.

i like the look of buggies, and i like them high up. Bajas are cool, but im too clueless to restore a vee dub body and clean up the rust (Cause i have no idea, unless there are manuals or books into body restoration) so i would find it easier to just rebody the whole thing into a buggy.

Is it really that bad, even if you have a soft top on?

I might go and see if i can price custom hard tops. Be interesting to see, cause the buggy obviously has no doors. It would probably have fold-up fibreglass panels that let you jump out. Sorta light eagle doors, but givin' u room to get out in a tight carpark. Cause how else can u get out, you gotta stand up to hop out.

hmmm, hard top. I have never seen a buggy with one before. be interesting.

if you had a hard top, you could make it lockable too. I've got an idea for a design in my head, its hard to describe. Could look real nice though.

as i said in my post i didnt spend nearly 20 grand on my car to go like puss
i had an external cooler on it as well so giving me more oil capacity than stock and seal kits well 3 lots of them and still leaked

as i said
THIS IS MY CAR AND I AM PUTTING A EJ22 WATER COOLED MOTER IN IT BECAUSE MY EXPERIENCE WITH TYPE4,S IS THEY ARE SHIT
I WOULD HAPPILY RUN MY OLD COUNTERWEIGHTED 1641 T1 MOTOR BEFORE I EVA EVA EVA PUT A TYPE 4 BACK IN

I HAVE NEVER ASKED FOR ANY ONES OPIONION AND I NEVER ASKED FOR ANYONES HELP WITH DOING IT

THE WHOLE VERY VERY SIMPLE ANSWER IS PEOPLE LIKE DIFFERENT THINGS

and reliability , smoothness, aircon, quiet, quik, bang for buck
are things you just cant get from vw engines

I respect that. It seems like ur getting up me for something with the caps.

By all means, i aggree with you, i was bragging on about the subis last night on chat. And i didnt say i wanted to help you, and i have always had respect for people's opinions for different things.

But yeah, ur a champ for takin the subi option. Its pretty champ.
U guys at custom offroad wouldn't happen to be able to do custom fibreglass works would ya?

If so, would you be able to do the fibreglass hardtop for me?

Wow what a Roller Coaster of a Thred, Quite exciting reading...

Now for my 5c worth...

Mate I would buy what you can afford, in Queensland if you keep your eyes open you can fund a Buggy for under $5000 That will get you about on and off the Beach/Track.

I liked them and had about $4000 to spend. with some car knowlage I was not afraid of a work in progress but it had to be
1: Rego-ed and in CURRENT REGO, these babys are a bugger to get inspected ans slipped again just in QLD, in NSW i am told to forget it (So my buggy still has a QLD address.
2: Running, and this goes for the body as well, No major rust and No big Mechanical probs and realy the rest you will learn/teach yourself or find out on here (AVD).
My Manx I bought with a Blown Gearbox, althought this was my second box swap I had no previous knowlage of how to do it the first time on my ex girls bug, Just asked for tips and followed the book (Oh yeah, GET A Workshop Manual and befriend your local VW guy. Buy your parts off him and ask LOTS of questions. Be humble as FREE advice is hard to come by these days) So if you can drive it home your half way there.

Just a Question you are prepared to work on your Buggy yeah...?
these buggys are quite simple in there construction and that there is there attraction.

So if you want a Subi powered Buggy then look for one and you could get lucky, you do not need a HEAP of power, they are so light and off road it is all about how you apply that power. many buggys that i have seen are Quick and get in and out of all kinds of rough spots only powered by a 1200.

Get your buggy and when you want more power well by then you may be able to afford to swap to another engine type.

What ever you get you will have fun in and you will get it bogged and you will break her and then with loving care you will fix her up again ready for the next thrash out in the mud...

Keep a good eye on the Sellers part of this forun and the trading post, and approch Buggys of Baja's you like in the street, check them out and ask the owners about them, they may even know of ones for sale or hiding in a garage someplace...

Good luck with what ever you get..

Oh and you want to lock stuff up, Get a tool box....

If it is raining and you do not want to get wet, DRIVE FASTER

And buy a hat and sunnys, Hard to drive without them..

Enjoy

Thanks marine boy. Yeah, i might go 2nd hand. If i get one for 4 k that would save me atleast 21 k if i were not to build it.

Thats pretty neat. But with a new one, i just like the idea of starting from the ground up, cause then i get to know every nook and cranny and all the workings of it and how she has been treated.

I got it all budgeted (If i am gonna build it). I will have 8.5 k to spend on a buggy each year, giving me 34 k to spend on a car (if i really want to) in four years time. Then she would be a beast!!! (Probably enter it into shows and all)

But, i might just buy one send hand. i dunno.
I'm still planning. Be good if i could get a custom made hardtop. Anyone have any suggestions on that?

Dash colour: Middle-tone blue (not navy, not too dark, not too light)
Radio antenna for the CD player installed and wired.
Carpet, front and rear including the luggage area (Light blue)
a wiper motor $65
I saw your Rego information section, and the kit that you supply (option 2) does not appear to have the required components for rego.

So I was wondering, how much extra would it cost for you to have,

1. Mudflaps To be fitted to the rear. >>>>supplied
2. Rear seat to have headrests and be fixed into position. >>>>>>Not required
3. Windscreen demisters.>>>>>supplied
4. Dimmer switch for dashboard gauges..>>>>>supplied
5. Lens to be ADR approved...>>>>>supplied
6. Steering column shaft to be collapsible type, steering wheel to be late model soft centre type. (provide the parts to obtain that) >>>You supply or supplied with the rolling chassis or $120
7. Padding on roll bar to be 19mm thick O/A.>>>You supply 8. Lap and sash retractable seat belts front and rear. (for a 4 seater) >>>You supply or $380
9. Pulleys, belts and exhaust to be covered $140 fitted
VW beetle tank, $110
Spare tire rack $245 powder coated
TOTAL OPTION 2 COST: At most, 16 k (estimate)

Subi engine conversion=including all for it: At most, 10k (estimate)

Therefore, the total cost is $32,800. Thats pretty rich for a buggy. Hence why i worry, that if i do complete it, i will be too afraid to take it offroad. Who would want to bash around a 32k car?

These prices where obtained from Mike Sharp, of Sharpbuilt buggies australia. His site, (Which some of you may already know) http://www.sharpbuilt.com.au  has all the info about the buggies. Ithink he was really annoyed after naggin' him for these prices.
