good to see a very healthy interest in the type 3's, unfortunately i have not started grinding yet, late finishes at work have left me exhausted, will hook in on the weekend...Mr Scooter, that wasn't a Dell (boat anchor substitute) your talking about, where did you buy your spray putty from, i'm liking the result, feel free to post more, pics here or start your own, i don't mind, just show us some pics, cheers.... my instability from the eighties still haunts me whenever i see re runs of the factory, MTV re runs or Mullet hair fashions for men and women. can't escape the eighties, Alans (Das Dubber) 80's revival drag Bug was tempting, but bank balance says.....not another one

Sweet! I haven't seen straight bumpers on any of my rides for a while, nice job Mr Scooter, did you chug a bit of caffeine for the task of taping and painting? Also was it through a gun, i like the venetians? What was the story bout the type 3 next to yours? Green over white?

You guys have got a lot to answer for!
I spent today giving my poo yellow (thanx for the rare colour code Adam) square a fine sand down and bought 3 cans of satin black!
Attacked the thing then a mate said it would look better by using spray putty to fill the low points (its my first paint job!)
That in turn made me spray bog practically the whole car and re sand the lot.Glad i did though, lots better than my first attempt.
Tomorrow should see the thing totally painted with 2 more satin black rattle cans, paint the recently painted white roof to bright red and I'm done.
I swore a budget of less than $100 and I'm well inside that (except the scotch)
Will try n post pics tomorrow night
Apologies to the purists
Cheers for the pics Mr Scooter, love that colour

Can't wait Lee, how are the fingers after using rattle can to paint your square?still good enough to lift a scotch or four :), i used ten cans on the square, mind you, i hope you used a mask or respirator when painting AND sanding, that shit gets right up your nose and things don't taste quite right if you don't use one. I'm taking the engines out of the fasty and square today, lifted the tar boards out of the square (we had a lot of rain, that i seem to get caught in EVERYTIME) there are a few pin holes near the accelerator pedal and under the passenger seat, the fasty was retrimmed not long ago throughout, so as much as i hate it, the carpets and boards will come up as well to find, hopefully nothing. I will post pics tonight, Dave, just out of curiousity, why are the Monzas not so good? is it the design and overall flow of exhaust gasses or are they just plain Crap and bad for your donk? Hey Lee, anything looks better than Poo yellow, except of course Poo brown, sorry if you have a Poo brown VW, to each their own

Mr Scooter, did those weathershields come with the Square or did you purchase? if you did buy em, where from? Looks good. 4 litres, holy crap, that's four kilos extra the poor little 1600 has to cope with... what was the rust like when you bought it?did i mention how envious of your bumpers i am. Nice ride mate :)

the weather shield i got from george @ classic veedub. they work too!, i also got from him some door and decklid rubbers, eye lids and empi short shift kit.
the blinds i got from vintage in sydney with some other stuff... oh and some bits, sportswheel, disc pads and things from micks.

hardly any rust in the square when i got her. just a little bit in the bottom passenger door. the floor is dry as', and bits of surface rust where the paint had worn thin, that happens after 35+ years or so. she looked like some worked had been done before. the vents around the wipers have been removed.
i just got into her and gave her a tidy up. and sprayed heaps of rust proofing stuff in every little nook and kranny...... ahh love that smell.......

she had a ding in the right side rear tail light where it had been backed into something. i banged a few if these out , little bit of bog straighten it up.

i have a few more things i'd like to do.......... like painting the roof matt black, and fitting a wooden bowed roof rack.. maybe also a meshvisor, some spots... and then..... and then..... where do you stop?

we could always slam her!! :ninja: but the front scrubbs out already.........
keep those pics coming, lets see how those rides turn out...

wanna see you guys at the next meet, whenever that is? klubfest??

Yeah Adam, all painted.Sent a pic to yiour email coz i still cant post pics DAMN IT! Always says 'file too big' with one photo!
Anyway,i had Waaaaay too many scotches,6 cans of satin black and one of gloss red for the roof.Looks fine to me and got the thumbs up on its first drive so i reckon i got the desired result for my first paintjob.
A mate is getting a square now, after seeing what can be done with mine, thatll be good when he's finished it.Real fussy guy with bodywork. Not like me

Happy Days! Great to see peoples enthusiasm for the underdog...incidentally, does anyone know sales figures for type 3 ? just the years 1969 to 1973. I had a look under the fasty's carpets...nice and dry, so, it's just rust in the c pillars, winscreen, rear quarters (minimal) and the bottoms of both doors, should keep me busy for a while. keep those type 3's coming guys and girls.

Lee and Mr Scooter, are you guys running a standard exhaust on your type 3's, if not, what have you got, just curious to see how many people have had their rear valance bent and mangled to fit a system....this shits me to tears...Yeah mate, We'll just bend that useless bit of steel back out of the way...better yet, lets cut some holes instead!:td:

Amen to that good buddy :) did an engine swap yesterday, fasty into square...square being stripped for modest rebuild...1641, the fasty engine turned out to be more powerful than i expected...will run the Monza exhaust till i get my new system. gave the engine bay a good clean...Kero and a brush did a bang up job. the engine out of the square has shat it's oil pump seal well and truly, found a dented pushrod tube leaking oil as well, the clutch has almost given up too. will put pics up tonight after i have tidied the shed a bit...and had a few lagers, gotta keep the fluids topped up

NO wonder its been chewing fuel!
Sounds like i have issues with reverse gear too.Doesnt sound real good when reversing, sorta whiny grinding sound
A bit like listening to my ex missus :)

Grab yourself a clutch kit Lee, no biggy to put in, just have a spare pair of hands for engine out/in muscle work. I think my Sachs kit was less than $230 from Mick Motors... drives like a new one, tidied up the shed afterwards, makes a difference to be able to walk around not over VW's to work on them

Engine went in easy, drives beautifully, shifts quietly but i cannot get the GEN light to go out, read wiring diagram (sober) cleaned wires and contacts...still no good. Thought i'd see how the wheels off the fasty would look with a quick wipe with this stuff, will remove wheels and take tyres off to polish entire wheel properly..good stuff.

this is after about five minutes of gently wiping rim with a small section of the cotton wadding, will probaly use Mothers and a bit of gentle toothpaste and brush to remove tarnish, should be good after i've hit it with the dremel

Ill take the white square (??) in the background!
Ive booked local vw guru to go over the square,he'll probably put a clutch kit in it with a major service and safety check.
I havent got time mate,i work as a contractor in building industry and it keeps me busy.
And my shed is a 6x3mtr tent from Supercheap with a dirt floor thats not real good for doing mechanical stuff.
I spose you could call it a shent?!

changed all the fuel lines...
for only six fiddy..
we live for another day!

move onto the next thing now... the door rubbers and front window leak, but only when it buckets down...
