Thanks guys....my oldest son (13 years old) has been the only one that has really gotten into it so far, but I'm sure the others will join in when they see something constructive, rather than destructive going on

PS: Chris, you could always move down here, I'll adopt you and you can join in the fun on the Notch!

Hey Matt, you obviously know Andrew (Splitmeister) then?? :D

Thanks for the offer on to help track down some parts, that would be GREATLY appreciated!! Let me know if you know of any good condition bumpers....Im not fussed about having to re-chrome them, just as long as they are straight....and of course the floorpans are an issue, so if you know of a good pan, you can let me know on that one too

Mate, can I also say, I LOVE your restocal bug, that is one awesome looking ride mate!!

Whereabouts in Adelaide are you, we should catch up some time to have a chat about where I can get bits and pieces for my Notch, seeing as I'm fairly new to VWs and you have obviously been around them a lot longer than me!!

Cheers,

Paul

hey nice work Mattie, I would love to know what your bro has and if he wants to part with any of it please mate! My bumpers are mixed, I have one with overriders and one without, an dthey are both a bit sad, so I was hoping to at least get a matching set....not too fussed if its with or without overriders....just as long as they are straight:D I would really appreciate you checking into it for me.

so are the BRMs going on Andrews bug....or something else? He had Radars on it last time I saw it. you guys havent got any more wheels you want to get rid of have you??

we will have to catch up sometime definitely, seeing as you are so close to my place.....

cheers mate,

Paul

So anyway guys, had an hour free on Sunday so whipped out to he carport to do a bit on the Notch......

RH door removed.....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/1aRHdoorremoved.jpg

LH door removed.....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/3LHdoorremoved.jpg

Engine lid removed.....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/6enginecoverremoved.jpg

I also started removing anything that was going to stop the engine from coming out easily, like the dipstick tube, the air intake bellows etc. so hopefully, the engine will be out on the ground the next time I have an hour or so free.......
I know, I know, it shouldn't take an hour to get one of these out, but this will be my first time doing it, and I will have a "helper" in the form of my 13 year old, which might actually slow me down, rather than make it easier. When he is helping I like to take it slower so I can explain why things are done in the order I do them, and also I try to explain what the different parts do etc. so he learns while he is helping....good in theory  sometimes not so good in practice, but he is really getting into it! I am very proud of his dedication to the project.

Once the engine is out, we will be looking forward to whipping the body off the pan....woohoo....exciting!!

Sorry for the boring photos and story, but every project starts with this sort of stuff I guess.

Thanks for looking,

Scarab (aka: Paul)

cheers bro....yeh, the Notch is a pretty solid old girl.

All the bits that look rusty on the outside of the body are all pretty much surface rust and/or staining....all of which will come up a treat with a good sand and a good prime.

I am debating on whether I need to brace the body internally before removing it from the pan....what do you think guys? Those of you that have removed your bodies, did you brace it, and if not, did it flex a great deal?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Cheers

I know that for a Beetle you normally don't brace it unless it's a convertible. I can't speak for the weight of a Type 3, but it took 4 people to lift the body of my old Baja that I finished stripping last weekend, so make sure you have a few mates around.

Thanks Jason, I appreciate your thoughts.

Not sure about the good hands comment though  Just doing what I think needs to be done....hope it all works out in the end :tu: I am REALLY looking forward to pulling off the body, but I have to get rid of an old Liteace van I have sitting in the driveway before my wife will let me make more mess....and putting up the roller doors would also be a good idea before splitting the pan and body.....I am just impatient.

I am laughing pretty hard at the moment, they are in the process of putting up the driving age here in Adelaide, so my son is a bit upset  Seeing as he now has a couple of more years to wait, I told him to get a part time job and buy his own car to do up so we can work on them both at the same time.....he's warming to the idea.....he wants an early Type 3 Square, so we'll see how we go on that front.

Thanks Ryan....if you are going to watch this thread, you will be watching for a while....its gonna be a long haul before its on the road again :D

Thanks to Jason for answering Ryans question about the gauge.....it would have tested my memory quite a bit, i have never driven this car, and only had it for a couple of weeks before i pulled the dash apart and put all the parts in boxes, so I would have had to REALLY test the memory with that one!!

....I think it also has L & R indicator lights on that gauge too doesn't it Jason??

The only progress I have with the thread at the moment is that my new cement mixer has arrived from WA (Ebay purchase)......how does this relate to my Notch I hear you all ask......well, my carport is probably the width of three cars, but only has only been concreted enough for 2 cars, so I am going to concrete the rest of the width over to the fence line, to give me that bit of extra room to use once the roller doors are up.....boring update I know, but in my mind, it is still progress!!

Thanks for reading,

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Yes the early style has the indicators and I "think" the lights for lights on and high beam. I have not seen the gauges from a 70's car but at least for the 72/73 those lights are in the speedo housing.

thanks for the pic Doc, it jogs a few memories of when I pulled mine out and stored them, thanks! :tu:

and Terry, I have seen a couple of pics of overseas (ie:USA) Notches in orange recently, and while I think it looks great in the Selecta pic in my signature, I wasn't all that impressed with the real thing....although it was only in photos off the net that I saw these other Notches in the orange, and sometimes those type of photos dont give a true representation of the real colour.

I have also been toying with a real bright silver like you see on Mercs and high end vehicles (I know that sounds wierd.... 'bright silver', but I just mean not a grey ) and Colonel Mustard suggested a bright red ( I like this idea quite a bit, but I think my wife is over the whoile red thing, as I have collected a LOT of Ferrari paraphernalia over the years after working at the local dealership and I think she has seen too much of it for her to get too enthusiastic about a red car in the driveway  )

Still undecided though, and open to other suggestions / examples.

Cheers,

Scarab (aka: Paul)
