Well I had a look at my CB yesterday and WOW its certainly progressing well !

The side panels had dents in them, so to panel beat these out I gave my restorer the OK to remove the outer skins to work on them..........and I was VERY suprised to see what was behind the outer skin (inside the side pods)........NO structural rust, in fact the rust was so minor it was just a couple of surface rust areas. The metal is actually painted from the factory in a satin black......maybe the shells where dipped ??

With the outer skin removed, it can now be properly painted inside and out for future piece of mind.

Thats interesting about the black inside Craig I noticed the same thing Also there appears to be a type of sealer on all the joints underneath like a smear of black silastic about 20 mm wide ( but there was no such thing in 1967 ) I have scraped it off and the metal underneath was like new almost looked like galvanized but it would'nt have been I wonder what they used ( bet Bill knows)

That stuff that’s used as a sealer seems to be the 68 equivalent of an acrylic sealer, then there’s the tar stuff that’s sprayed over the joints. After 32 years it’s all a bit stiff. After I had my chassis blasted and had it undercoated it with 2 pack, I then brought it home and filled every single joint with acrylic sealer before sending it back for black paint. There’s no joints or gaps (on the outside anyway) for any water to get in between to start any rust. I then poured some paint inside the “Napoleons Hat” at the front and turned it over a few times so there’s no exposed metal in there. As for the body, there seems to be a bit of “paint” or some protection on the bare metal they built these things out of but it wasn’t dipped. In the joints there’s plenty of scope for rust and that paint’s pretty thin, but there are big patches where it’s still giving much more than the protection it was ever designed for. One things for sure but, that one in the film, splashing around in the sea water, it’s long gone. I’m thinking about how I can get something like “end rust” (if it’s still available) inside the side pods to see if I can get it to last at least another 100 years once I’ve finished it. Any ideas how to get the best internal protection? Would seem a shame to do all that work and not get the very best protection.

THEY ARE STILL OUT THERE.......
There are new ones coming out of the woodwork every month. A good example is the army green one that Ztnoo alerted us to on Ebay last week.

Its still there , last time I looked.

I always have my ears and eyes open and I am always being surprised.

BTW, have just returned from the Bad Camberg event last weekend back to London and have now seen the 1938 KDF that was found in Lithuania and featured on The Samba. It is outstanding. The restoration was a no expense spared effort.
