Getting major service wednesday.I'd rather someone that knows these things go over it for any potential probs.
Have bought an extinguisher today though!:)
On that note,i saw a squareback owner at the shops last week and where was his extinguisher? In the boot screwed to the engine cover! WTF?
Not the brightest of ideas ive come across

Fire extinguishers are a must I usually carry two, one strapped to the firewall in the cabin and one in the rear cargo area...$30 a pop makes sense tp protect your car, not forgetting to mention the people/family that ride with you, i replaced the fuel hoses in the engine bay with new stuff and the hose/tube that comes off the bottom of the fuel tank (taking tank out is easy and recommended if your VW has been sitting for a while, POR 15 have a tank cleaner and sealer kit that works well and doesn't cost the earth. thanks for the kind words on the shed, it's a bitch to clean if you let it go...at least i can see the floor. Mick, i've had that feeling several times and not always close to home either have you replaced the fuel line from tank to engine bay?, basic leather tool roll with spare hoses and clamps in the front luggage area is a must, how are other peoples Type 3's going, any dramas with repair/resto? I'll be stripping engine this week to the bare case, haven't stripped an engine since the 90's and getting out the lowering stick is on the cards as well...what shocks should i consider if i'm only dropping the square 2.5 inches? the ones on the square at the moment are okay but once you get into the sticks and away from the highway they feel limited and harsh

found the reason why the ride was shithouse...front bump stops? what front bump stops? and bushes...what are they? Mushed and non existent...oh and are shocks supposed to rebound? ...well up in the air she goes, it's only money :) more pics to learn from soon.

lenses are from classic veedub, you will have to modify them. a little bit of re-drilling the screw holes, and a bit of sanding on the ends to make them fit..

like most veedub stuff, there's always something to modify and nothing ever works out right first time through.

although wheni lowered the front end, it was too easy and i did it in only 20min, for both sides......

my car is running a bit rich at the mo. you can smell the fuel through the exhaust,, any way to fix this?? like how do i adjust the mixture, with out throwing out the balance and stuffing the whole thing up?

I'm having the same dramas Mick, bought a carby kit to rebuild both but i guess you don't want to go that far yet...1 km from home, cruising along at 110 a big ole BANG! puff of black smoke through the tail pipes and she died COMPLETELY...rolled to a stop and had a few ciggies, ended up jump starting from second battery...chugged and puffed to life, another puff of black smoke and off she goes, like nothing happened, i'm swapping generators today, plugs and points...very frustrating...let me know if you have any luck Mick. cheers, Adam

ej20t in a previously unmolessted 68 wagon , goes just a little bit better than stock ha ha. Wagon looks pretty average and is now well known in area for pissing all over commo and rice body kit boys. one guy was winging to a common friend that its not fair that a shit box vw made him and his crapadore look bad .
With your carbs check balance bar flex pipes and that the aluminium top half isnt warped leaving a gap between the bottom metal throttle plate . I've rebuilt many a type 3 carb and always had to flatten out carbs using file or sandpaper on a flat piece of timber or steel.
another reason why i went subi power. Oh and that pump circuit of carbs has the ball bearing unstuck.( under brass threaded plug in float chamber)

not really just alot of them, 7 in total . 2 x rad , 2x heater, 2 x int cooler rad , 1 x rad overflow. Wiring was the most time consuming as the front cut i go was from the top of the range legacy so cruise ac abs central locking auto and a crap load more, worth it in the end.

looking at that spaghetti juction of wires makes me think i have nothing to bitch about... what modification do you need to slot the subi in the back? engine mount, bracing etc...looks like a head full but the extra ponies would probably be worth it

basically the motor sits in a cradle using factory subi eng mounts, which bolt up to 10mm plates welded and reinforced at the back and the front is mounted up near where the irs subframe mounts, the whole cargo floor was cut out to fit water to air intercooler. And theres a brace welded across there too which has the subi engine stabiliser bar mounted to.

Plenty of that in the yard with 3 other type 3's ( 64 ,65 notch and 67 fasty) and 3 splitscreens and a lowlight sc, so never a dull moment.

Dirty head, barrells scored and valves cooked

took the heads off the original engine from square, i don't think they have been off EVER! i drove this fairly gently for 2500 klms before i pulled the engine, not knowing it's complete service history...books stamped up to 90K. spark plugs looked normal, carby manifolds nice and serviceable, carbies were okay apart from idle screw broken off and float valve stuck.... then i found these catastrophes. how do i remove the wrist pin? holding piston on? Gently i know but it's in there pretty damn tight? who sells heads or machines them on the Gold coast?

new barrells and pistons are on the way, just wondering if there is supposed to be burnt oil in the inlet manifold? I'm thinking not, curious as to why? and what do these numbers signify? 057 0n the left head and 067 on the right...anyone? Thanks, Adam
