yeah got some good in car footage, but to big of a file to remote host..............anyone know of a video editing programme i can get hold of ??? i need to chop 30KB out before i can up load anywhere>

car will run again, new colours picked already, lined up paint and panel sponsor:yes:........maybe a few electrical wires to replace and obviously new fuel delivery lines.................not sure to stay soft or go to steel lines?

car was running better than ever with new clutch and turbo pipes, boost coming on much lower and peaking at 30pds..........which made the car much easier and predictable to drive than ever before. new clutch is great.

check out how much fun we were having on the trailer tyres for the first couple of days........(pages 5 +6).......

running well, re-routed and shortended most of the excessively long vacumn, water and of course the fuel hoses, looking much more organised in the engine bay now:tu:.....can't wait to get it painted and out again

THE SUPERSPRINT SAGA........a true tale of man V machine both possesed

well, after the fireball at Raleigh the engine damage was quickly repaired and engine fired up......all sweet.

the supersprint date had been set and we wanted this car there in an attempt to "proove" it's worth as one very fast VW.

a month out i loaded it onto the trailer and successfully set a date with the panel shop to have the rear end repaired and colour shot over the cacky green and purple......all good at a very nice price and low priority job as a consequence........the turbo was spooling up getting it up the ramps, all seemed good.

the trailer was taken to the sparkies to have the lights and electric brakes fixed up and my "ol man" was slowly coming around to the idea that he WAS the nominated tow vehicle owner/driver

with 13 days left to our departure date, a visit to the shop revealed one untouched notch, no probs still time, i decided to keep things moving and finished removing bumpers, tail lights and the rear window, then grabbing the sander and roughing up the paint and ridding all the flakey burnt bog and crap over the next two days........then back to work till the Friday one week before Wakefield meet.

a visit to the shop on the Friday again revealed one untouched notch .....and worse still i wouldn't be able to access it over the weekend to get anything else done

go to plan B

a couple of phone calls later and a rescue team was on the way to reclaim the car and a deal struck on the phone Saturday morning to have a friend over see panel work proceedings during the next few days to have the car ready for re assembly and a test session by the Wednesday before the supersprints......HA HA!

the ever growing team made it to the remote secret rebuild location whilst i continued work Saturday morning (well someone had to pay for all this!).........upon arrival mid afternoon, with no expectations for progress on the rear quater..........i was greeted by my smirking cousin and this scene..........the car kinda looked a bit "blanker" than usual as i approached it from afar:crazy:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/16052009007Medium.jpg

it would seem some confusion had reigned in my absence as to how much was to be painted and what was to be a quick lick of paint on the rear was now somewhat of a larger project!!..........Lukes laughter that he had been the one to authorise a total respray was probably the equivelent to my dumbfoundedness over the situation with just 7 days till the start flag dropped over 700kms away from us..........apparantly my mate had picked over the crappy paint and decided we may as well respray the whole thing:love:

so that was Saturday afternoon so i removed the last two windows and went back to work........a late night visit revealed that the holes from chrome strips been taken care of and most of the small dents filled ready for sanding the next day..........the plan was one bog, one high fill undercoat, one sand and one paint session.......

Sunday afternoon, the bog work was finished (well it's rough but we all understood the body is just a mule for what lurks beneath).........and a decision on paint colour had been made as we masked it up...

"red or blue"....

"not red........blue like that bucket"

"that's too dark, it's not straight enough"

"blue like that trolley"......

"yeah, that reminds me of Falcon GT tru blu.......sort of similar shaped cars, bit square, bit round"

"sounds patriotic, Jeff will like that, it'll do"

"ok, i'll order it Monday, you pick it up and we'll paint Tuesday"

Jeff still hadn't been told we were painting his whole car, nor what colour:lol:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/17052009003Medium.jpg

goodbye gay green :punk:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/17052009005Medium.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/17052009007Small.jpg

it was Sunday evening when we shot it with a guide coat..we were enjoying the sunshine and out doors.....but that was about to change:mad:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/17052009012Medium.jpg

sooooooooo Monday i had to stop at the local sign writers with cams manual in hand to organise racing numbers and battery triangle etc.....and did the 2hour trip to pick up the paint in my luch break that "the overseer" had ordered before rushing off to Newcastle to dyno his 9 second drag car (that's why he needed the $$ and was willing to work on the weekend)......back to work till 6PM for me then return to commence hand sanding the high fill coat..........."no need to take off every square mm of the guide coat" were the instructions..........we'll with no finger prints left on my hands and a couple of red bulls later.......i had done just that, finishing up at midnight.

even worse was that the wind was now howling and rain a certainty on Tuesday.......PAINT DAY:grind:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/19052009Medium.jpg

yeah well Tuesady was WINDY and WET, but there were breaks in it and i pushed on, the snow ball effect was happening and more parts were being prepped for paint between work shifts and a temporary booth was sorted........

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/19052009003Small.jpg

"the oversee-er" arrived back on a high after lunch with his 125HP shot of nitrous giving his car instant boost and 480HP on tap when the trans brake was released........he had decided the 600KG car might need wheelie bars after all:crazy:.......he went for it, saying again that getting ALL the guide coat off was madness........we were pushing each other now:dork:........the car was painted, looked great and the Wednesday would be spent on re-asembly YAY!!

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/19052009007Small.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/19052009005Small.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/20052009Medium.jpg

THEN TUESDAY NIGHT.........it REALLY started to rain, wind everything!.........the ol faithfull booth LEAKED for the first time........wet paint got, well WET :grind:

so Wednesday (again between work shifts) against any desires of mine whatsoever, as i swore my last ever sanding was finished Monday........ the whole car was colour sanded by, you guessed it........my hands.......which were now beyond lack of finger prints, and bleeding :fakesniff:

Wednesday evening, it was resprayed while i went to work.......and even tho the weather was conituing to worsen, it somehow stayed dry....pheww

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/20052009001Medium.jpg

so that night i went and grabbed some parts to touch up at home while the paint cured and i was tired of being wet and cold anyhow.........we were now facing the serious possability of being flooded in

couple of more red bulls and these were masked up and painted in the garage at midnight........

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/20052009003Medium.jpg

while they dried, the missus helped cover the headlight glasses to comply with cams, and they were pieced back together just before bed time.........Thursday was already here before we hit the sack, so it really was do or die time:!:

Thursday morning greeted me, wet, windy and cold........on the way to work just before 7am, the last strand on the freying clutch cable of my beetle let go.......i was gutted and rang my dad and told him to flip a coin right then and there........wether we went to the supersprint or not rested on the result......how many signs did i need that it just wasn't ment to happen:punk:

well, after my shift, i changed that cable in 35 minutes flat and headed out to the notch, a plan in my head and parts for it strewen throughout my car, sheds and home........the session went well, removing the masking for the first time got the excitment happening........more red bull......... the rivets and washers i guessed the size of were right and to my surprise the perspex windows went in without craking.....

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/21052009001Medium.jpg

the bumpers went back in their place (although the rear ones battled because of the engine stabilisers being mounted there).......... and that was all i had time for......grabbed the trailer and started the car as the heavens opened up good and proper.......what happened next was madness.......the car was spinning the tyres trying to get it on the trailer and in the back of my mind i wondered quietly why it didn't boost up and slam the new body work fair into the side of the trailer......sadly the rush had tasken over and i didn't think too long or hard about it, i was soaked to the core and didin't have a minute to spare to get to work

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/21052009004Medium.jpg

the chevy only just managed to get the trailer out of the driveway..........and a team of us were now running seperate pieces to get organised.

Jeff was 4WD tractoring the slicks and spare accross his now flooded driveway on the other side of the valley.........so he could rendevous with us all in Nambucca where i could conitnue working on piecing the car back together and load the necessities in together while everyone slept .

Mark was loading my beetle onto the tilt tray to get it into town for me so i could get home that night

my father was en route to take the trailer off the chevy when i made it to work so he could match the wiring to his tow vehicle that afternoon before dark and add some more clearence lights to the aging float

somehow it all came together, the passengers seat still there from the VW spectacular was removed and every vacant inch of the race car was loaded with race suits, helmets, tyres, spares, tools, jacks.........and strangely Jeff had delivered a set of "cut" slicks even tho the car was already on "wets"...........perhaps the farmer had taken more of an interest in the the wether forecast than someone who had been stuck under a race car all week.......

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/21052009007Medium.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/21052009006Medium.jpg

well it was on the trailer and packed..........nothing else was, but the car was ready bar the stuff that still wasn't put back on yet (well we thought so:crazy:).....Thursday night 11PM

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/21052009011Medium.jpg

then things went down hill, i knew i was possesed, but unbeknowns at this stage, the car was too..............

yeah we'll, looks don't go fast unfortunately........

still the weather worsened Thrusday night while i slept (oops).......i didn't have enough red bull to keep myself awake long enough to pack my bags, but i did have the forsight to put my cams licence and paperwork in the race car (if i didn't have anything else i would be able to race still ) AND set the alarm.......

well, it really was flooding and the alarm never went off due to a blackout........i awoke an hour late and again asked dad to make the "yo or no" decision for me when i phoned him to confess that i was late and still not organised.........not his favourite trait of mine

we did get away tho after the missus helped pack my bags and the rain and wind belted us all the way down to Sydney...........and then Golburn........i can honestly say the wipers were not turned off once during the entire trip.

Saturday morning we had a lazy start.......it was still wet and cold..... the list of things to do made weeks before was shrinking, but still long.

arrived at the track after stopping at the big sheep for some suitable 98 octane fuel and got the car off the trailer and into a nice dry pit lane shed...........and the gear unloaded from every nook and cranny

headlights went in, tailights back on (with the only reference to which wire where being a picture on my phone), dad put the wipers back on........Zane dried the car off so we could put the numbers and battery triangles on.......then he changed the harness to one that was "in date"..........coolant and intercooler liquid was topped up oil level checked and we headed for scruitineering........despite the tyres being on the wrong direction and lack of tow hook markers (i had bought some off ebay that didn't arrive in time).

man the car was running rough, but it does that some times and a quick squirt always did the trick in the past

well we copied the size of tow triangles off Boris' car in the scruitineering shed and put the wing mirror back on just in time............

the sighting laps and my first session came and went without me while we swapped tyres around and bled the brakes.........Zane fabricted a cushion for himself in the meantime and suited up and strapped himself in while we mounted the transponder on the roll cage........the door slammed shut and he headed for the dummy grid just after his group was called..........he didn't make it:no:

.........so again i hauled the car hurriedly back to the pits to mount the front splitter on and correct tyre pressures...........finally we were truely ready YAY!!

well, the anticipation of that first rush when the thing hits boost was eating me alive.............it's no relaxing drive in the wet and i was wondering if i would be brave enough to even get into the noise in third gear..........

Steve Carter sent me off from the start line and i flattend it waiting for the tyre spin of 260HP with no grip..................NOTHING, NOTHINg.........and still nothing.........i knew instantly it was lack of boost and didn't complete the lap.

opened the boot and started with the simple things......blow off valve signal vacumn line was split........too easy...........blat round the pits......still no boost

look deeper........ map sensor ok, wastegate not stuck, exhaust not leaking........

pull aircleaner pipe off the try and look in the turbo......no chance.......stick fingers in there, ouch HOT!!!........bite the bullet, it's hot, but it's also siezed ........it moves a bit, then stops, then a bit then siezes..........the all of a sudden it spins freely.........Luke was there helping and tells a tale of their off road buggy having a drop of weld doing the same thing then dislodgining and the thing survived............could i be that lucky?

Sides wanders past and asks where the dislodged piece will end up?............i replyed "who cares"........and i ment it

re-assemble and off to the grid..........foot flat to the floor NOTHING:grind:...........it's stuffed

game over.

"THATS RACING"

why?, how?, when? are the questions eating at me now.

i'm as keen to find out as i was to make the super sprints.......hopefully not too long for a diagnosis.........gotta wait for the floods to go down....

because the car is still in Kempsey, 70 Km from home.........where we left it..........the highway remains flooded and i caught the train back to my missus and reality from there.

what a week !!!!!

The word from the pits Daimo was that some other disgruntled EJ20T Type 3 owner wasnt up for the competition and dropped some metal shavings into various spots around the engine

Sorry to hear that, was looking forward to seeing it blast around the track. To me it sure looks a lot deeper blue than in the photos.............and imo much better than the green. What weight do you have that thing at now, it should be screaming? Im a touch over 1000kg and about 20hp down on your figures plus nowhere near the handling setup. Would have made some nice times.

I love 242HP sleepers.

How many sets of lights does it take a $229k Carrera S to learn? UPDATE: Cayman S, M3, B4 now added to the list.

Hi Damo

If we awarded a hard luck trophy you would surely get it, thanks for making the effort, I'm glad you got to have a few laps in Rods car at least.

;)..........yeah mate, i'm sure you did.

.........the one lap i did, it was handling great, i thought i was actually gonna have to pass the mini till he drove away on the back straight........

it's somewhere in the 900kg region from memory......i believe Jeff had it corner weighted

times.........well, i wanted to go there and run right along side Rudi.....next year

yeah Steve, i enjoyed my drive and the whole adventure..........apologies for the red mist descending and my brain fade resulting in me passing on the out lap in Rods car........there were plenty of hard luck stories around the paddock, i just hope it turns out to be something simple (well only a fried turbo)..........although number 3 cylinder wasn't firing, but that may well be a burnt wire from the fireball or a spat cylinder:borg:.......who knows

happy to support the event this year, and in the future..........i always said i didn't go the the nationals because there was no racing anymore........so when there was, i wasn't going to miss it....... what a great format and venue!!!!........i will have the "spare" race car there next year too, just in case:no:

PLEASE lets do it again.

yeah Matt.......looking forward to working on my street car again.........but i don't think it will be staying too street for long .

anyways going through the motions to get number three cylinder firing we swapped coil packs, plugs then decided it wasn't either........went on to find a soldered signal wire from the computer had come apart and that sorted that. still no luck with firing and went onto find a terminal in the plug on the injector had slipped back and wasn't making contact.......so with those two repaired we were firing on all 4 again, YAY!

plug showed signs that it had been firing previously (they were only installed before going to the panel beaters)....so bad luck alone was the culprit for this going aray somewhere between home and Wakefield.

.......but there wasn't boost either

so we start nutting that out and having already dove into the inlet side of the little spinner trackside, it was decided to take a look in the exhaust housing.......so we took the exhaust off first

again we couldn't see anything in the blades nor feel anything through the wastegate, but turning it back and forth we could get it free spinning again. start the engine we could hear the turbo spinning, then a fluttering noise (like a kid on a bike with something clicking on the spokes)as again whatever it was in the housing would jam in there to once again stop the turbo spinning.

now feeling confident it wasn't a oil , nor H2O delivery problem.

it was obvious now it was something in the exhaust housing......although we were quite complexed as to what it was, as compression testing showed a healthy 165PSI accross the board and as such we felt it couldn't be anything that should have been still inside the engine.

so we pulled the turbos "up" pipe to have another go at copping a feel in that housing.........so up i go like a rookie proctologist to find some gunk in there.......grabbed the air blower and forced air back through the thing from the exhaust outlet side and for the first minute nothing fell out but the familiar "whistling of the blades (allbeit in reversed direction) was quite pronounced.......then some chunks dislogged splattering me in the face and the turbo could be heard spinning it's head off........

these chunks were about the size of a little finger interesting.....

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/08062009Small.jpg

i hadn't looked back down the up pipe yet, but this is what i found.......

one very messed up and loose catalytic converter......

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/08062009003Small.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c365/dumone/08062009002Small.jpg

so the heat shields were removed and pipe sectioned to remove what was left of the converter, then wleded back up again.......

soooooo getting rather keen at this stage of the evening, it was decided the local test track was begging for a lap and everything thrown back together about 6pm tonite............the best reason yet for having lights in your race car :punk:

........the familiar whistle was back as i negotiated the "pit lane", i didn't have dash lights in the boost guage nor rpm counter, but did in the speedo...............set the shift light at 6000rpm and when it flashed in 3rd gear in next to no time,i new that would be my last chance to look at the speedo :fakesniff:

.......it was well past the 90mph and fourth gear was dissapearing damn rapidly too........

naturally the car still has issues, when i got back to the shed safe and sound, one of the headlights was GOOOOONE........how can you bounce a car 1600 KM on a trailer then take it for a 10 minute run to have the headlight dissapear on the side of the road?

possesed i say!

:spin:..........ha went and looked for the lost headlight this morning and found it a good distance off the road (albeit glass and bucket one side and reflector/bulb) on the other.........

amazingly none of it was broken despite the scars from a good couple of bounces on the tar......maybe my luck has finally turned.

for those who have asked me along the traps, turbo is IHI VF30......good bang for buck in the VF series before going to ball bearing, good quick spooling, to avoid lag with only slight loss on top end, great for high boost aps (the car is set to run 22psi, but problems with it cutting out with over boost now has programming to run 7 psi over the 22 when air temps etc have it making more).aside from it's prformance characteristics, choice for that turbo was partially made on the basis it was rebuildable........thankfully it didn't need it this time around
