I am soooooo mad at the moment, I just spent 20 minutes doing an update of my Notch on here and the stupid modem logged me out for some reason and I lost the lot!!!! AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! :grind::grind:

Anyway, so lets try again.

OK, so I think I might have a problem. I have worked on the Notch 3 days straight!!!! Someone call the Guiness Book People, we might have a recond on our hands!:lol::lol:

Anyway, after the debacle of the rear screen exploding before I could get it out, I thought I'd cut the front one out....much better!!

This one came out in one piece....WOOHOO!!:tu:

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/2aCompleteWindscreen.jpg

I then thought that removing the hoodlining would be the way to go. Don't get me wrong, the old one is STUFFED!! but I wanted to keep it in one piece so I could compare it to a new one when the time comes. It came out fairly easily, despite the sun making it very brittle in places, especially the pillar covers.

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/1bHoodliningKit.jpg

And an example of how the 'A' pillar cover has been destroyed by the sun....it is EXTREMELY brittle!

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/7aHarshSunDamage.jpg

I was pretty happy with the condition of the window channels front and rear....here's a couple of shots of the rear channel.....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/2bLHRWindowCorner.jpg

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/3aRHRWindowCorner.jpg

And here's a shot of the only point of issue. Its front passenger side of the windscreen / dashboard area. Not a big deal, but I'm real thankful that its the only issue with the turret of the car.

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/4bLHFWindowCorner.jpg

Anyway....quite a satisfying weekend on all fronts. Just that little bit further ahead of where I was a couple of days ago.

Thanks for looking,

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Great to see things coming along Paul.

Don't you hate it when you write a massive update and it gets lost?

Keep the good work coming mate.

A word of warning....this update includes lots of photos, I know how everyone HATES photos!

Last night I was looking for something to do on the Notch.

I know I won't be needing these for a LOOOOOOONG time yet, but I thought I'd see how my gauges would clean up.

First up, the clock.....I don't even know if it works, but it still deserved a clean up....so, this is what it looked like before....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/1ClockBefore.jpg

....and this is after a clean of the face, respray of the bezel and a polish of the rim....much better in my opinion anyway.

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/1aClockAfter.jpg

It doesn't look too bad I reckon....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/2eClockAfter.jpg

Next up was the feul gauge and warning light assembly....

A before shot for you all to see how nasty it was....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/4TempBefore.jpg

And what it looks like now....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/4aTempAfter.jpg

Another before shot from another angle....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/4dTempBefore.jpg

....and what it looks like now from the same angle....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/4fTempAfter.jpg

Next on the agenda was the speedo.

This was particularly crusty looking and needed a fair bit of work.

I am particularly happy with the results!!

Whoa....hang on, its time to go to work :grind: .....I'll have to post those photos later, sorry!

Thanks for looking though!!

Really been looking forward to sharing these next couple of photos....I am so stoked with the way the speedo came out!

The original speedo was pretty crusty with an aftermarket decal stuck on to convert MPH to KPH....wasn't real keen on that!

Anyway, here's the before photo, take particular notice of the decal and the "patina"of the housing etc.:

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/5SpeedoBefore.jpg

Now for the big reveal.....polish of the rim, respray of the bezel, removal of the decal (that was a pain to remove and get the glue removed!! :grind: ) and a general overall clean.

Are you ready for this.....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/5aaSpeedoAfter.jpg

oh yeh....real happy with that!!!:tu::tu::tu::tu:

Another before shot for you all....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/5dSpeedoBefore.jpg

And another of the cleaned up unit....

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/5eSpeedoAfter.jpg

So all in all, last night was pretty productive....after a couple of hours work I have a nice set of original gauges ready to use!! Love 'em!!

http://i609.photobucket.com/albums/tt175/scarab_notch/6GaugeSet.jpg

Thanks for stopping by and sharing in my excitement!!

Cheers!!

I agree with Smiley - they look fantastic. Better get moving and finish the rest of the car so you can get it on the road and watch them working. Something to look foreward to now.

Cheers guys, appreciate your encouragement.....if the rest of the car cleans up that nice, it will be good I guess

I think it might take more than a rattle can, some windex and a bit of alfoil though :D

PS: The alfoil was used to polish the chrome. I saw that someone recommended it on the Samba for polishing chrome.....genuinely suprising the results it gives!! :tu:

Polished chrome.... bah who wants that?

Nice stuff though man, no good for my car, but handy to know what you can turn gauges into! I have 3 sets and should probably clean one set up lol

The sticker, one of my speedo's has that, kinda handy though....

OK...so...after not posting for so long, I expect you all thought I was dead....but I am very much alive!!....just not working on the Notch a great deal lately :fakesniff:

Anyway, this morning I went and checked out a new pan for my baby, and it appears to be a very nice complete pan with front and rear suspensing/brakes etc.

....even came with a free notch body ....had to snap it up!! Thanks Andrew!

Photos soon hopefully.

hi paul

Sorry to hear about the rear window.
I know its a little late now but i used to fit windscreens
in cars as a job, so if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask.
if I cant answer it my dad certanly will be able to.

Around the back screen opening looks really clean, got my screen
out the other day and to my suprise their was more rust:lol:
however it was not to major. I also have the same type of rust in my
dashboard on both corners.

Absolutely love the way your gauges came up and have decided to
give mine a go too.

good work keep it up

I'll see what I can do....I'll try to dig up another gauge and do it up and document the process....watch this space

Got another set too...

As for the rear screen, yeah man, I really need to get the seats out of the damn notch and get them into mine as well, but for the life of me cant get the seats out! Ill work it out soon enough... then i gotta split the body from the pan...

Hey Doc....I like the look of the set on the right....they will be good to show a before and after shot.

Type 3 seats are a pain in the bum to get out if the runners are worn.

There is a small clip on the tunnel side of the runners...from memory, you need to push that down to get it past the stop. I can give you a hand when I come down your way to get that screen if you cant work it out.

Cheers,

Paul
