i just messured mine today and its just under 3 inches free length and .9 of an inch compressed , but not sayin that its the right length, i just blew my oil cooler and the spring might be the cause, dont forget its not just the length but the tension , the book says 17 pound and my spring feels morte like 50 pound, and thats on a 3 week old 1916 .
