cheap painting
i have had it sugested that it is possible to paint a bug with a brush as long as the paint is worm, and not have it look too bad. i dont have access
to spray gear. Has anyone tried something like this, and have comments? i am not looking to show, but i wouldlike a car that looks OK, and is going
to last for a bit, so that if I get the $$ later, I can doit right.
Also, is it possible to paint a pannel at a time, so that I can take one pannel, stripit back, remove rust etc, and put it back onand have a useable
car again without having to do the whole job at once?

I heard that Rolls Royces used to be painted with a brush rubbed smooth and more coats applied ect ect I am sure it would be possible provided your
preparation is good and you rubbed back each coat but this would only apply to acrylic paint
Keeping it real !

You can hire a 40lt compressor for about $50 a day. Uou can also pick up cheap spray kits from Repco for around $40-50.
Try using old school enamel, you can get 4lt for under $40 with thinners.
Good luck.

My uncle in england paints his kombi with a paintbrush all the time (crazy) he only does it to pass the mot i think.
In terms of panel by panel, i am planning to do my kombi like that when i get the time. I am guessing you have a bug? so suppose it would be just as
easy/difficult. My plan is to do the doors and hatches first cos i can take them off and get the hang of it with them before i take to the body.
I would also recomend the spray job rather than the brush but if you are going to do it in sections and it costs around $40 a day to hire a compressor
it may be worth buying one. I am going to buy a decent compressor and then get a grinder attatchment and polisher/sander attachment (and spray gun),
will probably spend $1000 or thereabouts for that but then i can take my time (plus the compressor will come in handy for other round the house jobs -
i hope)

ive done a kombi the trick is to use penatrol an addative to remove brush marks and a new good brush, also helps if you have done a bit of painting
before, lay the paint off in the same direction,

I'd always recommend doing a proper paint job, but if the car doesn't warrant it, or you dont have the dosh you can do what I did. Its very easy to
over capitalise on a VW going doing a paintjob as you end up restoring the whole car!
I painted a beetle back in 97 with a high density roller (you got to make sure its a high density one). Obviously prep your car the best you can, and
then you use common house enamel paint, thin it out a bit and then roll it on. Make sure you are in a dust free environment as possible.
Let it dry for as long as you can (a week or more), then use a cutting compound like Farecla G3 finishing off by hand with T-cut or similar. If your
arms no longer feel like they are yours you havent polished enough!
The end result wasn't too bad considering it cost 10 pound ($25) and after I left the UK in 97 I sold it to a friend who kept if for years and the
paint held up really well.
I have some pics below of the end result, and I have a link describing what I did with a few more pics (excuse the quality they were scanned with a
hand scanner in 97!) on an old web page at:-

Good luck

ok firstly you can paint with a paint brush/roller and get a very good job.Rolls Royce did hand paint all ther cars up untill about 20 years ago and a
lot of restoration shops in the uk that deal with old old classics still do it so that the cars as close to original as possible.
There are paints that are ment for this (where you get them over here i dont knows) its a very long job, prep the car, apply first coat wait 10
mins, second wait 15,third wait 12 hours.Rub back with 1200 wet and do again, repeat this 5 times and on the last rub back just buff up. The result will
shock and supise many. A very deep and full look to the paint.
No one does it this way anymore as you can get a great finish with 2pac for a lot less effort. I have seen cars painted with house paint and it can
look ok all depends on what you are after to what you use......
