Fitting a by pass oil filter
I have a Frantz oil filter, the one with the toilet roll inside. I have not had it fitted to a car for over 20 years.
I want to fit it to my TP 1600 in the Country Buggy. I was thinking of getting the input side by putting a T piece on the oil pressure sender but not
sure of the return. On other engines it would return by a special fitting that screwed into the sump above the level of the oil. On the VW I think it
was a hollow bolt near the oil pump. Any ideas?:jesus

if you plumbed the return straight back to the sump, and relied on the standard oil pump to move oil, then you would lose oil pressure and starve your
engine bearings of oil. it needs to be plumbed back to one of the oil galleries, also if it was plumbed to the oil pressure sender it wouldnt filter
all of the oil all of the time.
One solution is to get an oil pump that has an inlet and outlet on it. They work ok and you get full flow oil filtering.

The pressure switch hole is only 1/8 bspf very small , I would not go that way , fitting may brake off .
you are best to tap the case ports .
Looking for that special lady : PM me for coffee & cake

Hey guy's, this is a BYPASS filter, not a full flow one. They bleed a little high pressure oil from the pump outlet (all pumps have excess oil) and
filter it through a toilet roll. This filters much finer than a normal filter will do, been around for donkey's years.
Country Dubber I have one (Australian made copy) fitted to my type 4 motor, and the guy I bought it from has a number fitted to kombi's, beetles,
type 3's etc. All instalations I have seen fit a tee to the pressure sender as you say.
I plumbed my return into the "breather box" on top of the case of the type 4 motor. I your case I suppose you could tap into the metal "breather
box" on the gen/alt post, next to the oill filler.
It only bleeds a dribble of oil (~1lpm) if set up correctly.
I did fit a slightly larger oil pump just in case, and I suppose you could do the same for piece of mind.
Good luck!
OH, and seagull, all cases I have seen have a M10x1 thread, not 1/8"(NPT or BSPT). They are very close, but not he same.

mmm that seems to make more sense!
I assumed that the filter and associated fittings wouldnt have much resistance. Full flow or bypass its better than the stock mesh screen which might
stop a pebble

Thanks for the info Andy. I was not sure about returning it to the breather near the oil filler cap as I can feel quite a lot of air flow from there
an thought I might just blow the oil on to the ground! I may tap the generator stand to get the return a bit lowwer if I cant find another solution.

Cool,
I can't find the number of the guy I bought it from if you'd like to ask him, but could chase it up if you like? Into the stand would be fine I
guess.
ALSO note today's toilet rolls have a larger diameter inner cardboard which doesn't fit the filter housing. I have to go back to him for more rolls
when I need them (~$2ea or there abouts). They have batches made with the smaller diam.
Cheers,
Richard

Brad,
I'd have to look around to get you "proof", but the new pressure switch's and "Tee's" I bought had M10x1 and went together with the case fine.
NPT and BSPT you could feel were (very) slightly out. It is also the size I measured on a few old type 4 pressure switches.
They are all very close, so probably not a real drama.
M10 and BSPT are metric threads and NPT is US.
The VDO pressure switchs are available with M10x1, but I could only find a pressure gauge sender with NPT. The Tee I used had M10x1 in the ends, NPT
in the side.
Oh, talking about that don't you owe me a Tee piece??
:kiss
Let me know if you want more details.
