help with my 54


hi there guys im got a 54 oval im restoring ... but not to toatl standard , but mostly , im into to sure if u can put a 1400 big bore kit on to a 36 hp and change it over to 12 volt or should i go for a big engine like a 1600twin port .. any help would be much appreciate . by the way im in coffs harbour :thumb

it would be a LOT easier to cpnvert it to a 1600 - and cheaper

1600 twin ports are plentiful and cheap. Convert to 12 volts while you are at it.

Yeah - just wont be stock, but......................:jesus

Forget about doing anything to the 36hp engine.... you need a 68 on 12V 1500 engine... enough power to get u out of trouble and cheaper to maintain and convert into the 54.

You should replace the split case gearbox as well.

What ^ said. I'm kinda restoring my 54 as well. I chose to run a 40HP engine which is still a 1200 but is the 'newer' design engine. This is handy if your insurance compnay is a titeass about mods. yeh, change ya gearbox to a later model as well - better taller final drive ratio for better cruising and it'll fit the later model engine without needing to grind out the bell housing...
