Mk 1 Golf Questions

Hi,
My VW background is in Aircooled stuff but I recently ended up owning a 1979 Mk1 golf, much to my own surprise as I'd always sworn off the water pumpers.

The car was originally a GLD but has had a 1600 petrol motor put in it some time ago.

My questions are.

1. Did the diesels have heavier front springs 'cos this thing really sits up at the front.

2. What's available in the way of front/rear disc brake upgrades. I think the diesel had the worst brakes of all the golfs the fronts are solid discs currently measuring 8.8mm thick and in need of machining. The rear is drums. Front calipers are the single spot mechanism that has the bracket coming around the disc instead of the the caliper acting on both sides of the disc. Will later model rotors/calipers fit?

3. Why doesn't my heater work? I've flushed all the hoses through, I know water is passing through the core but I'm still cold. It's summer now so I've lost the motivation to fix this one, but winter's not too far away.

4. How on earth do you fit those circular engine mounts? I finally got one of the old ones out but the difference in diameters makes it look tricky to press in even with a shop press. Any secrets?

5. I wouldn't mind a mild cam and a side draught Carb. Any suggestions?

6. Is unleaded ok? I mean I've got no choice anymore but do I need the additive?

7. Can I fit the 5 speed box out of a later model and what's involved with the shift linkages?.

That'll do for now. Hope someone will be kind enough to help out.

Thanks Andrew,

The mounts I was refering to are the ones either side of the engine bay. The brackets are different but the mounts that press into them are the same. They're a steel ring about 50mm in diameter with a rubber mount in the centre.

I'll give GTI imports a call as soon as I get a chance. Ive got a few things to sort out first before I venture into the brake upgrades.

1. Fix camshaft oil leak. (Got the seal just need to fit it)

2. New struts all round, change front springs for petrol model ones to make the car sit level. Rebush front arms.

3. Flare front guards or fit GTI flare extensions as the new front tyres come out of the guards a little too obviously.

I never realised how well these things handle until I put the new tyres on it. It came with 175/70/13 re-treads. I looked around for a bit to see if I could get some MK2 14" steel rims gut ended up picking up a set of 14"x6" ROH alloys for a song. The tyre place had a deal on Bridgestone G-Grids so now the cars fitted up with 195/60/14 G-Grids. Handling is awesome, if somewhat skittish over bumps. I only drove on them for the first time last night. I'll have to check out what tyre pressures they've set up. Corner speeds are up by about 10km/hr. The car doesnt have the very direct steering feel that my Beetle had I need to investigate why. There might be some tie rod end that need replacing or something. Or it could be as simple as a wheel alignment if the toe-in is set wrong.

Enough for now.
Thanks again

The front brakes off a mk3 golf will fit they are a direct bolt on , just the hoses need to be changed .

I think the heater doesnt work cause they run a flap to direct where the air goes , mk2 use the same set up

I have a complete 1.8 stroker motor and a webber cam sitting in my workshop , make me an offer . I think it even has those engine mounts on it .

5 speeds can be fitted but needs a bit of work with linkages , I think there is an Audi thats a bolt in with minor mods to the linkage . Dont quote me on that my watercooled experience starts from 1994

Bug_Racer, which state are you in? I'm in Vic. My finances wouldn't allow for a motor purchase at the moment. I'm in the process of selling my house, so once that's settled I'll consider making you an offer on that stroker or any other bits you might have lying about.

Karmen, I've considered upgrading but I'm happy doing all the work myself. I'm not in any great hurry, I just buy bits and pieces cheap as they pop up on e-bay or at swap meets. It's sort of fun having a ratty sort of car as you can do anything with it. No restoration issues here, the car's just not that special. Once I've settled into my new place I'm going to look for an Air cooled project car to take seriously. The Golf's just a run about. I've got a company car during the week but I'm not allowed to drive it in my own time. (Stooopid employer.)

Pete Jones.
