Subaru EJ18 Conversion?
Hi Guys,
I've been reading alot of posts about people considering subaru conversions(mostly EA82T's), I never knew that so many were interested in
this.
Anyway, does anyone know anything about the possibility fitting the nat-atmo EJ18(from 93-96 1.8 imprezas) into a beetle. These seem to have decent
power and would probably be easier to register and insure than the older vortex turbos.
Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers
Josh.
ps. sorry guys, you must be sick of all this conversion crap.

Yes I'm of the old school. Volkswagens come with Volkswagen engines and they work fine. They're cool. They sound great. They go OK. They
belong.
The first time you get busted by a speed camera or a cop with a hidden radar gun in your stock VW, you tend not to want anything faster anyway.
It's happened to me many times.
VW engines belong in VWs. If you want a Subaru, go buy one.
Or maybe I'm just getting old !

yup your getting old
I'd say go for it...76kw sohc it should be a nice fit although I do not have the dimensions. I don;t think I've seen one done, most people
going for this sort of conversion do so as they are after more power. However after looking at the numbers produced from the dyno day thread I would
say that 76Kw is loads. Good luck and let us know how you go. |

AFAIK, the cam cover to cam cover dimensions of the EJ18 are the same as the EJ22, which is 2.2 liters. These are also very similar in width to the
EJ20T (turbo ie WRX / RS turbo) motor. The non turbo motors have to be an easier conversion than the turbo, because the exhaust is simpler, and there
is no intercooler to stuff around with.
I would say if you were doing an EJ conversion, go the EJ22 if you dont need a turbo (EJ22 = about 100kw anyways). Part will be much easier to get
hold of inOz too, I dont ever remember seeing an EJ18 (not saying they arent out there tho).
