Price of 1776 or 1600 dp T1 reconditioned motor
Howdy,
My little 1600 motor gave up the ghost the other day and i thought well i might get a nice new reconditioned engine wanted 1776 (hard to come by?) or
a 1600 twin port of corse, cant go higher then 1776 as its a stick shift auto.
Basically just wanting an estimate of the costs involved in this area:
1. How much for just the motor.
2. Installation of special Semi Auto Oil pump (should be able to use my current one)
3. Installation, timing ect.
4. Can anyone reccomend a good mechanic/s or person to do a GOOD job for me in Adelaide SA?

Are you planning to do this work your self??
or are you after a drive in drive out deal from a mechanic??
What happened with your motor??
Not fixable??
The semi's are getting a little hard to get parts for now, so hopefully all the associated things are ok.
A mechanic i know in Sydney does cheapie rebuilds for under $2k - i have had one, so has my mate and they are fine.
I know another mech that will charge like $7k for a 1776 - 1916 hottie.
So the answer is some where in the middle.
The car i just bought had a mech rebuild the 1600 and just changed to 94 pistons and barrels and made it a 1916 but it is no fire breather. Just 25%
increase over stock. Great city driver. He charged just under $3k( i saw the receipt) and i will say it is a real nice job.
Them again i have sold several long block 1600's that were in brilliant nick for about $300. '
Would cost say $500 for some one to do a swap over for you.
So.... some where between $300 and $7,000 :P

Thanks for your reply,
No i'm not doing it myself sorta want a drive in and out solution.
One say was just driving the beetle and the just started backfiring tripping on accelleration untill the point im at now lucky to get it to start and
when i go to idel it will stall even if i sit at the lights with my foot down it can still stall sometimes, i have replaced spark plugs but wasnt the
problem, just thought a rebuilt motor would be a quick fix.
I'm lucky i got a spare automatic gear box for it but thats all i got spare :P

have u checked your points? id get someone who knows what they are doing to have a look for you before u decide to get a new engine.

thta doesnt sound terminal
Could be points as said, or coil or somethiing in the electrical line effecting timing causing the back fire through carb.
Could even be valves
Terminal motors usually clunk or knock
Sounds like it needs a good tune first before further decisions are made

Someone should install it for around $100, find a good 2nd hand motor...if you want the cheaper option, they come up every now and then...
