engine heat and tin ware?
this is a topic i have heard people swear by on both sides... i am wanting to know what the majority on here think.
does NOT having the tinware, that runs behind the engine over teh gear box, make the motor run HOTTER or COLDER?

I know someone who ran without this tin and felt they had no prob.
On the other hand all the years I've been messing with VW's I've always believed that it should be in place, and I know alot of people who would
agree.
If Volkswagen felt originally, that it was necessary to begin with then thats got to say somthing, and they would have spent alot of time in R&D
sorting out heating problems.
I feel that all the tinware should be in place where possible. (big mods in engine bays somtimes lend themselfs in re-design, and costly mistakes)

well this is what i was thinking, anthiron. i went over and had a look around my buggy. it has nothing!
also the air would feed in at the rear and straight into the back of the fan shroud.
i was thinking maybe teh rear tin is to stop road grime and objects entering the engine bay. i can see how the front tin would maybe insulate the
compartment from teh exhaust and headers.

i dont beleive my baja has this peice of tin u are talking about and although it doesnt have a temp guage the dip stick is never hot to touch and ive
not had any troubles.

yep. the dcab. im am thinking of trying some mesh screen for a rear tin ware. it will let air through but no rocks and shit. this is why im asking.

make sure you have a temp gauge,
go for a drive up a steap set of hills, on a hot day with the tin wear on. record the temp.
now repeat the drive but with the tinwear removed. record the temp.
compare the two.
Now do the same test on the freeway at 110km/h,
if the temp difference is negligable, then it's all fine. But I tend to think it might be better with the tinwear in place.
Nothing beats proper testing.

Are you using a doghouse fanshroud? Hot air from Oil Cooler exits into this area so would probably be sucked straight back into air intake. Just a
thought.

heres a thought slow down to the speed limit  it will help lower your
temps mate a kombi was not designed to run at 140+km

I believe all the tinware should be in place as VW designed it
Its mainly designed to keep the hot air from the exhaust and from under the engine from being sucked into the cooling system.....
You can probably get away without some of this tinware if You never have to stop at traffic lights...
Like Me... as We don't have any here.... 
I have seen many beetles with tinware or the heater tubes missing and the holes above the muffler still open....
Bajas don't have the tinware around the engine bay
as its Air everywhere... but it may just be luck that they don't suck any hot air back into the cooling system when stopped in traffic....
I'm also a believer in the HOOD JAX.... they do work as the engine lid catches air flowing over the roof and rams it into the engine bay... [whendriving]...

a lot of people dont run it.
Pretty sure CT and Jak Rizzo (when it was air cooled) didnt run them.
A mate of mine on SBO has a 1916 and has some scoops made up as well.
IF you are doing high way cruizing then "I" think it would be fine, especially if you made up a deflector scoop as well.
If you are toodling round town (idling) it "may" be detrimental in a re-circulating air way.
If you are thinking of a performance donk for the dual cab, just get an oil cooler.

thanks for all that guys. and barls, my man mike keeps saying hte same thing, but i am sure there are better ways around it other than simply slowin
down.
am thinking the cooler option on the lady's bus, just thought maybe to try something different on the dcab, after checking the buggy, and stuff.
