Does anyone use GPS when offroad?
I'm curious to know if anyone uses GPS on their travels offroad? I bought a Fraser Island map on CD Rom and it has GPS readings for anywhere on the
Island so you can mark down on the map where your favorite campsite is etc....

So they do have some use then, I intend to get one, but more for another toy to play with. And it would be nice to be able to find your exact campsite
the following year when you find a good one.
I've also seen the new uniden UHF/GPS which has some cool features like red light camera & fixed speed camera alerts, and if you know someone else
with the same unit, it will tell you where they are...cool for when running around in the bush.

We use our VW's as bush / shooting rigs, we dont use roads much out west in 10,000 ha paddocks. Getting lost is very easy especially at night. We
mark a few key points, eg gates, dams, road junctions. It saves us heaps of time because we don't get misplaced as often.
If you are new to an area that has heaps of roads like pine forests, and you plan to take your female partner, they are great piece of mind.

i have looked into this and i am looking at the new uhf/gps units . . i plan to do a lot of the rallys when i am finished with the baja and for just
over $ 450 you can get a uhf/gps that will be perfect. It doesnt have tones of fetures but for what i will ever need its just right... i'll get the
model number and brand as its a mate sorting it out for me if your intrested....
oh that price includs ariel and mounting brackets...

G'day, yeah I've got one in the Desert Splitty and find it very useful for exploring areas where there are no tracks to follow. The inbuilt Compass
is handy too if you want to get back to where you started from but don't want to backtrack, just set the direction you want to go and head off
accross the unknown. Great fun out in the Great Sandy Desert in WA in a Splitty. Shakes the 4x4 boys up when the Splitty comes out of "the land of
no tracks" when they've been stuggling on the Canning Stock Route. I've got a Garmen Map 76S, about $700+ but worth it.
