Auto conversions

Hi guys!

Long time no see!

O.K. here's my question. An auto conversion to a Kombi is a nightmare and not worth doing, but I seem to remember someone saying that a similar conversion to a Type 3 is not so much of a problem.

Is my memory addled and useless on this?

Thanks in advance for your gems of wisdom and smartarsed comments.

MT to AT.

I understand the other way is probably easier though.

I think in terms of cable, pedals etc AT to MT is easier. Going the other way you need to install a clutch pedal, tube for the clutch cable etc.

I am not sure how difficult it would be to find a type 3 auto transmission and pedal cluster.

Purple I think you are right in how hard it is to find the Auto and the shifter there's are not alot around

When it comes to changing over work wise it is much easier going to AT from MT as long as you have the Auto and selector and the kickdown swivel

I have done it both ways in the last few years.
.
Pedal wise when I changed mine to Auto I left the MT pedals in the car just tied the clutch pedal down and put the carpet over it.

First you will need to check on a Auto car where the hole for the shift cable goes through the pan.

Get a T for the vacumn hose from the manifolds as the Auto needs vacumn and the kick down switch which works off the swivel for the carbies so you will need the Auto one or you can put the switch under the throttle pedal so when you floor it the Auto kicks down.

You may also need to file the case away where the Auto and engine meet so you can do up the bolts for the torque convertor. As Auto cases have an access area for doing this under the engine
If you want to have a look at An Auto case and pan give me a call so you can come around and have a look.

Hope this helps

Seagull was always after Type 3 AT's I think, so yeah, it may be a problem. Especially the shifter. It sounds like considerably more effort than finding a decent auto to begin with, and probably more dosh in the long run...

Thanks guys! That's really food for thought.

kombi auto boxes are a lot longer ratios are not the same as well .

I sort of have this thing for autos as in Perth there hard to find .I run one in my Mistres trike , so like to keep some spare boxes & parts , like the flex plate .

I have a few boxes but there missing parts & I would like to have them complete .

As for cost I have a fully recon unit , all new seals & parts fitted , converter cut open reset & tested , recon starter $1700.00 .

But over your way you may find two car for this , seagull

Looking for that special lady : PM me for coffee & cake
