problem with supercheap is no one knows if they are compatable ....ie there are dif. types of relay...they look the same or similar...but? do they switch the same way?

no... bizarre...am not sure, but seems likely as nothing else has changed and no fuse blown

What about when you "flash"???

Can this happen??

Have you tried tracing with a multi meter??

There is also "usually" pictures on the relays showing Normally Open and Normally Closed

Find one that LOOKS the same and see if the pictures line up

Unusual for the VW headlamp relay to blow.....
Get a 2nd hand one from a wreckers......
If You can go and pick the relay yourself...
put a spare in your pocket.....

thanks fellas.took your advice and went to a multimeter....as assumed, no power on hi beam
went back to the fuses and removed them, they looked ok but very old, replaced them anyway, and the lights worked!
feeling a little embarrassed now.
on closer inspection, in decent light, you could see the break in two of the fuses but the metal strip seamed to be adhered to the body of the fuse preventing it from seperating..maybe something to do with the age of them...odd that two should go at the same time? oh well
my sons happy again now he can drive back to canberra tomorrow night
frustrating afternoon....amazing how often it turns out to be something obvious!
