Voltage regulator
I got a new voltage reg for the bus about a year ago. Tonite driving home from the beach i notice the voltage flickering and at low rpms would drop to
about 12-13volts and above idle would be past 16v (max on gauge). Im worried and dont want to fry the alt or bat. I was suspecting i had bumped a wire
off the reg but was too dark for me to check so just drove home (5 mins). Got home and checked, the earth wire had come off and the regulator was
about 50 degrees... pretty hot. So im guessing i have fried the regulator. Any ideas on how to check the regulator or if it is definantly the
regulator.
Cheers guyz

It would nto suprise me if you have taken out one (or due to normal ware etc) diode to teh alternator internatlly. These control the current and
voltage out of the alternator before teh reg. at this stage the regulator will not sense teh voltage correctly and thus drive teh voltage up.A auto
elect will be able to tell you more by testing teh alt.

More progress. I took off the D+ wire on the regulator because it was charging past 16v and i didnt want to do any more damage. Yesterday the voltage
dropped to 10 so i thought i would give it a charge for a while. Put the D+ wire on and it was charging at 14v no matter wat rpm. 10-15mins into the
journey home the voltage slowly crept up till it was getting past 16v. I thought it might have been temp of voltage regulator so put it in some cool
water then plugged it back in but did the same.
So it must be something temperature related inside the alternator...? Dad is electrical engineer and is telling me only hardware temp sensitive are
diode's... Anyone had a similar problem or know the solution??
Cheers
