if you're using OSX, then you can 'ping' the sever. If you're using Safari, then try clearing the cache and reloading. If you're using IE, then stop it, your making me laugh.

You can also 'shift click' the URL which should force the connection. If you're using Airport then check the signal. Wireless picks up crap, and you might drop out. But Airport is pretty solid. If you're using Ethernet port on ADSL or cable, then should not be a hassle.

There's no obvious reason ... Do a google search for 'bandwidth speed test' and use a free speed tester to see what you're connection is like. It is entirely possible the line is crap, your splitter box is crap etc., you should be able to bench mark what you're getting with what you think you should be getting.

Telstra Cable can be shite in the wet ... You might need them to check the line.....if it's just this site, then it's hard to diagnose ... The server does load-balance well, so if you're getting a 500 Internal Server Error then it might be refusing connections, but I can't see that, AVD is very solid these days....as the Techies....

Sorry can't pin it down more...

Are you using OSX?... I get a similar thing on my mac on occasion, which is usually fixed by simply clicking refresh.

Sometimes it goes out alltogether, which is usually my wireless broadband waves spacking out between the antenna and the base station 8kms away... but i assume you are only hVING THIS PROB WITH AVD correct? :)

Can't tell for sure what it is, but it seems connection related.

I also noticed safari do some spack things after upgrading to OS 10.3.9 last year... worked fine with 10.3.6...crap on a stick with .9...meh...luckily it was my dads PB that was the guineapig LOL...still comfy on 10.3.6 here.

what system you using?... Jag, Panther or Tiger, and what update version?

did you have a problem after upgrading to tiger from panther?... It is never reccomended that you use the "Upgrade" option... it always screws up...thats a given.

Instead.. I'd reccomend booting from CD/DVD and doin an "Archive and Instsall"

This will save your settings.. but install all new system files.

chances are it will get rid of a lot of issues, and generally run faster.

if you started with 10.4 when you purchased the machine... i can only reccomend reinstalling and stepping back one incremental update.

hope this might help.

The trick with dodgy upgrades from 10.4.0 -> 10.4.5 is that people should always fire up disk utility, and run "Repair Permissions" and see if the disk needs repairing by clicking "Verify Disk". I've done this every single time, and I've never had a upgrade screw up on me. And I do a lot of dev and have 720,000 files on my Mac.

On Barl's specific problem, I use Safari 2.0.3 (the version which comes with 10.4.5), and it's my main browser. It's not Safari's fault; I used Safari to develop this software, and I use Safari as my main browser. Therefore if it was a Safari issue with UltimaBB or our site, I would see it also. Therefore, it has to be Barl's gf's Mac or their connection.

NSURLErrorDomain -1011 errors used to pop up in 10.3.x when (pretty much all) sites didn't provide a content length field. It's not required by HTTP 1.1, so no one does the work to figure it out now unless you turn output buffering on, and even then, most web servers still don't provide it.

Try going to http://www.msnbc.msn.com/

If that also does the -1011 thing (mine shows the site fine), your browser needs updating to the latest.

thanks,
Andrew

i vaguely remember a 10.3 update which made safari crap itself, it was fixed by repairing disk permissions and the preference file...

look up a program called 'preferential treatment' on the mac OSX software/apps section on the apple website, its what i used to help fix it last time safari had a woopsie.

in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.
