dissy choice for single port engine?
im currently running a 009 on my 1600 sp with an engine that is otherwise stock.
ive read that the svda off a superbug engine would not reach peak advance and wont work properly on a single port engine.
i have a dissy off a 71 super twin port 1600 sitting on my bench (just needs new points and condensor)
i really want to iron out the problems and get my engine to run smoother and use less fuel.
is it worth buying points and condensor etc for the SVDA and putting it in?

From my experience, converting from a 009 to a SVDA dissy will make the engine smoother, both at idle and when running at speed/accelerating, however
I have found that you loose a little power when accelerating hard (ie: full throttle).
The SVDA dissys are designed to only give full advance when at light throttle (ie: cruising) - this stops the engines from pinging when under full
load.
I removed a 009 from my stock 1200cc engine in my '63 and replaced it with a 2nd hand SVDA dissy - the car idles great (cold or hot), and drives much
smoother than it did with the 009. I doubt that I would go back to a 009 again. I have also noticed that it will climb hills better too.
Give it a go - the parts you need are not all that expensive and the job of replacing the dissy and retiming it is easy and quick. It's worth a
go.

I would not go back to a 009 on my semi-auto since I swapped to an SVDA. Much smoother.

Yes,
vacuum advance distributors work much better than 009s...
009s are the poor mans substitute for the Vacuum advance dizzy.... and are tuned at maximum advance...
I drool every time I see a Beetle engine with a Vacuum advance dizzy .....

034 dizzy has the same advance curve as an 009 + vac advance.
You can also fit electronic kits to them as they have the same points setup as 009.
Also, avoid late dizzys with twin vac as they were set up for emission control and running a lean mixture.

I have a twin vac dissy in my 1200 (with the 2nd vac pot disconnected)...might have to try to find another single vac advance dissy and give that a
go....

Timing info for 049
Timing Set At:: 5deg ATDC @ 800-950rpm w/strobe, vacuum hose connected.
Try and track down an 034 they are "THE" distributor for a stock 1600 (single or twinport). You can pick them up second hand for around $30 on ebay,
and you can fit an electronic kit to them!!!!
They also go well in all other engines, remember, it's basically an 009 with a vac can stuck on (the best of both worlds).
