swing axle seal question.
ive got a passenger side rear that keeps leaking. pulled it off a few times. new seals etc.
basically you have the gasget inbetween the bearing cap and the backing plate.
the plastic press in seal in the bearing cap.
the rubber o ring which fits into the lip of the bearing cap.
and then u have another gasget that doesnt fit in between the backing plate and the axle tube. but i modifyed one to fit.
everything is tight.
stil leaking.
what am i missing/doing wrong?

from memory after 11 is the backing plate and another gasket like 11.
12 & 13 should already be there then its 14 to 21 using new stuff from a axle seal kit. i dont think 15 is used anymore?
thats what i did. 1st time it leaked because somehow 16 got chewed up. after i put a new 16 in it worked out fine.

Do You know where its leaking from?
seal isn't leaking?
Use gasket cement - on the gaskets...
permatex or Aviation jointing cement are good...
or You can use silicon [silastic] on the gaskets...
but I don't trust any paper gaskets...

so there's no gasket between the stub axel and backing plate? the kits usually come with two of the same sized paper gaskets...
...and Robert's ya father's brother...

i used both, one each side of the backing plate. anyway, that was not where my leak was from it was past the axle seal into the retaining hub and out
the little drip hole at the bottom.

welcome to the shitty world of swing axle leaks . ihave had so much trouble with my cars ,what i did was get german axle seals and replace the
spacer bush (with the o ring taper that the seal runs on ) even tho mine looked ok ,so 3 months they havnt leaked again.:beer:beer:beer

yes the kit came with 2 of the same sized gasgets......they fit well on the inside in between backing plate and bearing carp but dont fit in between
the backing plate and axle tube
i did have a tub of permatex which rolled under the bench somewhere never tobe seen again. so i bought a new bottle of it.
ill pull it off again in the morning and give it another go. this is shitting me to tears!

i know what you mean about the imperfect fit. i just let the bearing cap cut in.
also as topless says, a friend always sait to make sure the spacer face was in tip top smooth shape or else you are asking for troubles.

usually if they leak it is cause by the axle nut not being tight enough to locate the seal on the seal runner.
Make sure your axle nut is real tight and also check your seal runner is free from marks and grooves.
Next make sure you axle isn't stuck in, check it against the one that don't leak and make sure they both have the same amout of thread through the
nut.
Also is this a hybrid baja ? ie did the axle allways leak or has it just started ? There are several differenet bearing caps and if you have the wrong
one it will leak.
Lastly if all else fails remove it all and leave the gaskets off the backing plate and under the bearing cap. This will allow the cap to seat the seal
furtehr up the axle which will in turn reduce the chance of oil leaking out. Don't forget about the shims.
If you look in the manual they will only usually show one gasket not two, this is for reason.
Hope that helps.

Mine's torqued up correctly and it stell leaks all over my brake shoes..
I also did double up on the gaskets betweent eh bearing plate and the backing plate, and it still leaks.. argh.. the other side is fine, but i'm
afraid to pull it apart in case i disturb the seal and then I'll have TWO leaking axels...
sorry for hijacking.. seems like it's a common occurence

looks like im not alone....thats some consolation.
brad it has leaked before but have also fixed it before and gone for months with no leak.
the axle isnt stuck
alxe nut is tight as
ill see how i go tomorrow.

Hey Nick I had sort of the same thing a few months back with the buggy after pulling it apart a couple of times and swearing a lot I just tightened it
to a torque setting of FU*!+ing tight and it stopped leaking.

didn't see any mention of the o-ring that actually goes on the axle under the spacer.??? oil and roll/slide this onto the axle as far as possible
and check thats its not curled at all
i was taught to load the rubber gasket into the bearing cap (after tin washer), and the spacer into that mounted gasket before putting, the now fully
loaded,bearing cap into position......works a treat.
the o-rings are the bits to get right!
'lil one stops oil down the axle
big one seals oil from behind the backing plate
main rubber gasket keeps bearing cap sealed.
as Brad pointed out, it can be done without the paper gaskets

ok well just put it all back together.
gasget on both sides of backing plate. new o rings. permatex on contacting surfaces, nuts and bolts are tight.
time will tell

hang on amend that.
had a better look this morning.
wat i thought was trans fluid was actually cruddy water which had dripped down thru the drum and was pooling in the wheel.
might have fixed it after all fingers crossed.
