Tuff Box ( so far )


Ok im just about to rebuild the gear box for my oval and was wondering what your thoughts are?

Its a street car with a small 1776 with blow though turbo.
I'd like to take it down the track once in a blue moon so i want to built it once and make it last.

The box is a standard 1300 late swingaxle box.
Its going in an oval with short axles and i'll be replacing all the bearing etc and worn gears and selectors etc.

whats your thought on the guts?

gears and diff etc but keep in mind it will also be driven most days and i want to be realistic with. the amount of money i want to spend

If the gears are 'worn' there won't be much life left in the case

Stocko gears with just a Superdiff should cop that engine easy

The late 1300 boxes are nice and strong, but check reverse gear. and I would look at replacing the 4.375 ring and pinion with a 3.88 one from an "L" Bug, the turbo engine will like the taller gearing better.

I would do as dave suggested and fit the course tooth 3rd and 4th from an 1800 kombi box.
A superdiff or beefadiff is money well spent, and will give you enough strength
to do a lot more if you ever want more power.
The short axles will then be your weakest link, but will be of little trouble with
your combo, unless you have too much clutch or are an abuse junkie.

Things so far.


Ok well i'm trying to find a 3.88 ring an pinion splined type.

Or i'll settle for changing to a kombi 4th gear with key way and get a new 3.88 vw brazil one with keyway.

Also looking at fitting a super diff while its all in bits.

whats the better?

the one with 2 circlips or threaded collar?

also i see you have to buy the spider gears seperate and they only come in pairs.

are side heavy duty side plates worth while?

Hello,
While you are at it,you may want to look at upgrading your brakes to type 3 rears.I just did the tranny for a friend that you are discribing except the 3rd and forth that "DANGEROUS" suggested(very good idea by the way Dave).This is one of the great parts of owning a VW,you can do all sorts of combos using stock parts .Me personally,I like the used ring and pinions,they have already been run in and tested.

The threaded one is the go, but a bit of a pain for the builder, because the axle has to be fitted to the diff before you can fit the bearings and side cover,
so it helps to have some help with the lifting.
I have had some trouble with the circlip ones winding out when you spin one wheel.
Perhaps I am doing something wrong...
