Need Help - Engine rebuild
Hi Everyone.....
I am new here...been looking at all the posts for a while. I had an old 61 beetle that I restored and regretfully sold. Now I have just aquired a 71
Super that is stock standard and want to get alot more performance out of it but still want the reliability, basically in the middle of mild to wild.
Has anyone got any suggestions on what sort of pricing I am looking at and what sort of configuration. When I sold my 61, Stan Pobjoy and Hellbug were
the gurus at engine building.....is this still right? Thanks for your help!

well if you want to build it yourself first consider getting a good book like "how to rebuild your aircooled Volkswagen engine" by Tom
Wilson. Its a great book and it tells you the whole process from removing the engine to running in the rebuilt one.
A dead stock rebuild can cost at least $1500
If you are going to do it yourself and it's your first build i recommend building a stocker or very close to stock.
If you want performance a budget solution is to just enlarge the pistons and cylinders. For a 1600 the pistons are 85.5mm in diameter. You can go
larger to 90.5mm (to get 1776 cc's) or 94mm pistons (to get 1916 cc's).
to go to these sizes the engine case needs to be split and the cylinder holes and heads need to be bored larger to fit the cylinders.
The extra cost involved in going larger than stock is
-counterweighted crank + 8 doweling
-carbs + manifolds
-head work
-pistons and cylinders
-machine work
-exhaust
-other stuff like better tranny mounts (to prevent wheel hop) etc.
so going more than stock can cost upwards of $2000 on top of the stock rebuild.
Add more money if you are getting someone else to build it for you.
the 1776 or 1916 configurations are proven and are relatively easy to build and relatively cheap. They can push your bug along quite quickly.
Also before you put in any kind of performance engine you should make sure the drivetrain is right. The brakes should be overhauled if needed, ditto
the front end, ditto the suspension. You also should consider getting wider wheels to get more traction.
These are a couple of things to consider...

Read the other threads around here on "94's" and stroker moters to get a better understanding of what can be done.
As for the 2 dudes you mentioned, one runs a racing engineering workshop, is a master machinist and is still in business doing quality work;
the other is not.
