Carby Options - 1300cc Twin Port Beetle

I'm looking to renew the carby & inlet manifold on my '72 1300 standard beetle, as the heat risers have rusted through (I have heaps of trouble with massive flat spots once the air temp gets cooler) & the carby is now 35yrs old & drawing its fair share of air around the throttle shaft.

Investigations have shown that new standard carby & manifold is going to cost me between $400 & $500 so I thought I might aswell upgrade to twin carbies.

My options as far as I can see are;

1. 40mm Kadrons

2. 34mm ict Webers or Empis

3. adapt a set of Type3 carbies

Can any of these combos be set up to work correctly on a 1300cc engine?
I am leaning towards the Kadrons as they will provide more room to move when I am ready to increase engine size, but I am afraid they will be to big for a standard 1300.
The Webers would maybe not as beneficial on a future larger engine & the type 3 setup will probably be the cheapest but will bring with it the same wornout carby issues that I currently have.
If anyone can give me some advice it would be most appreciated?

Cheers
Brendan

surely someone would have a good SH one...? Big carbs on a 1300 is a waste - but so is $500 for a new carby!

Thanks for the input guys, I should have said that as soon as I have need to crack the engine apart (currently its solid apart from this issue) I will be going to at least 1600cc so that is why i am thinking of getting the bigger carbs now & rejetting etc when I increase capacity.

vw54, my existing manifold is a single preheat tube, but it is for a 31pict 3 carby so its got a smaller opening & bolt spacing is closer together than the more common 34pict 3 manifold.

Cheers
Brendan

Hi

The 1300 twin port also has smaller alloy cast ends as well and the rubber boots are smaller also. Might be better off getting a whole 1600 manifold and carb, seeing as your going 1600 anyway.

Thanks Steve, I didn't know that, I have 1600 end castings in the shed so I'll use them if I go that way.
an anyone confirm nor deny the fact that 1300 twin port heads have smaller valves &/or ports than 1600? I would assums cam would be different also?

Where can I get a carby rebushed & are the throttle bushes the only part that wears out that cant be replaced simply by screwing them off & replacing them or am I missing something?

Cheers
Brendan

Valve sizes

SAS,
I believe the 1300 valves may be smaller. I seem to remember my old Sealed Power Catalog lists different sizes. I'll see if I can dig it up, or get brave and crawl through the underhouse pile to measure up a 1300 head I have.

Measured &

SAS,
I measured 35.5 x 32 head diameters on the heads that came off my AB block 1300 TP. Same size as a standard 1600 TP.
