Generator Warning Light

When coming to a stop my engine dies unless u blip the throttle a little bit. It died last night when I stopped and when I started it back up the Generator warning light had come on. The car is a 74 beetle with standard alternator. I had cd player and headlights on at the time that it first started. My father and I have been thinking that its the voltage regulator. Regulstor is external type under the seat. When we remove it the light goes out on the dash, so fairly sure it is wired up properly. We tried unhooking the battery when the car was running. This shut the engine off, the the alterator is not charging the battery. D+ is reading 12.5v whether or not the car is running with the ignition on. Not really sure what we are doing so wondering if someone here could point us in the right direction.

Thanks
Simon

with those motorola alternators they should sit on 13.5ish volts @ the battery when the engines running regardless of whether its at idle or flat bicky

d/c the battery trick when its running doesnt work with alternator VW, u can fry the diodes in it

d/c the reg wont acheive anything either, it has to tell the alternator to charge b4 it will

the alternators rarely give problmes tho, its easier to rule out the reg first
cheapest thing to try would be go to the wreckers and geta 2 connection 30amp reg out of an old 70s holden
they should be cheap
ive never paid mpre than $10 for one
and try it out if u still have dramas then suspect ur alternator

Thanks alot for that. My regulator has 3 pins. Will it still work with that?

As for the dieing when it comes to a stop, do i just need to adjust the choke or somthing?

Thanks,
Simon

Yep idles and does everything fine. Its only when your coming to a stop at say a red light or stop sign that the revs drop off, the generator light comes on because its spinning to slow. Unless you blip the throttle it will usually stall. After you blip the throttle the idle returns to normal.

Thanks

sounds like u could have a slight air leak on the intake manifold somewhere

easy way to find it is with the car idling spray carby cleaner or wd40 around the rubber joining boots, carb base and around the heads where the manifold bolts on

if u have a leak ull hear the revs pick up abit
